    How Are They Doing It?

    Racing Midwest tracks, typically hammer down to start and burnt off for the feature...

    I have a few buddies that race Rockets (XR1 and even B/G), and they don't touch the J-Bar throughout the night. I've had 4 MasterSbilt's, and if I'm not dropping the J-Bar on the pinion for the feature, the car is garbage (side-bite wise).

    Is it merely a difference in chassis designs? Is it me?

    I don't touch it on our mastersbilt. But, it's a lot different than it came from Crothersville, as we race it today

      I feel like our car is balanced really well, and if it is, you shouldn't really need to change geometry much as speeds decrease. May just need some small changes to keep travels close throughout the night.

      If your car doesn't have an under rail on the right side, that may be a lot of it. The rear is just so flexible, it's hard to load the tire.

        More then likely its you, but not in the way you think or necessarily a bad thing.

        It's likely your driving style, I'm gonna assume you don't bend the (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) out of a car when it's tacky so once it gets slick the car is free (because you weren't overly tight in the traction and just bending car and making it go around the track when tacky.

        Just a guess.

          Thank you for the responses. For what it's worth, I have underslung the rear (myself) and added some additional bracing here and there, but am concerned I made the car far less forgiving than my previous ones (Note: this was a wrecked unit that I bought as a winter project, and with so much time in it just decided to keep and race). And as for driving, I do find that the older I get (mid-50's now) the less "daring" I feel behind the wheel, so as a result I am a pretty "straight" on entry.

          Currently I'm 8 3/4" up on the frame end and centered with the pinion to start. Is it possible those other cars start with more rake in the J-Bar and are adjusted to compensate for that when there's traction?

            XR1 is 8 3/4 on frame but 5/8 below on pinion, not sure how much lower you go then that

                While I don't disagree with Billets advice, when we stiffened our masters up, all the required adjustments got a lot smaller, and some we quit doing altogether.

                  Somewhat unrelated, but while on the topic of sidebite...I watched more than one video over the winter in which Tader stated if you stand the RR spring up (take angle out) it will tighten (at least snug) the car on entry. Is that correct? If yes, I'm not seeing how (and by no means claiming I know better than him). Wouldn't taking angle out of the RR lessen the roll-rate while stiffening the ride rate? I would think that'd actually free the car up on entry.

                  And in a broader sense, if we know that some/many are not moving the J-bar throughout the night, and [I've heard of] some that brag they've run their car "X" number of nights and have yet to move a rear bar (position), what adjustments ARE being made to compensate for changing track conditions? Undoubtedly load #'s, shock settings, maybe adding a spring rubber or two, but is that all it takes?

                    Standing the rr spring up will increase the wheel rate. That alone, would tighten off gas entry. You are changing the roll rate too though. I try to avoid complications like that if I can.

                    I can easily make it thru a night with just rr load changes, right side rebound changes, and small weight movements.

                      A few other options that can fine tune your side bite/turn entry- left side percentage, wheel offset on the rr, and last but not least, 5th/6th coil set up....Not many move static weight (some do more than you realize), but rr wheel offsets, spacers, rebound in or out on 5th coil, and rate of 6th coil are easy, common adjustments.

                        If you do nothing but move the top of the RR coilover outboard, it will free entry not tighten it.
