fitting at top of bert

So the Bert we bought has a hose that runs from the fitting at the top of the transmission (above the side cover) down the side. What is the fitting at the top of the transmission for? Would this rubber hose be for overflow of some sort, or venting? Just making sure it needs to be there. Thanks

It is for venting. It will probably also leak.
