400 sbc crank help

Alright this is my first year in a race car I have a limited late model and will be running at Portsmouth raceway park.
I am on a real tight budget and was needing help on deciding on a crank
A scat forged steel crank for $513
Eagle cast steel rated at 550 hp and 7000 rpm internally balanced for $205
I will be only have about 300 hp/380tq or so
So the hp thing I'm not worried about but I have heard that the forged crank hold the bearings better but I think I should be running about 6000 rpm or so

Stay away from the cast steel cranks. Some last for awhile, most don't. Save your money and pick up compstar, there better than the eagle or scat, and not much more money. I PM'd you my #

He ll with the lower hp and low rpm.A stock gm crank would hold just have it balanced and get a good set of bearings.I seen a local guy rum his mod engine 7400 rpm all season with a stock gm crank.

I vote for the stock crank too. The compstar is still a China forging. I have put thousands of laps on stock 400 cranks in limited lates.

Thanks...... That's what I'm doing with the money I was gonna get that with I think I'm gonna get a sat of heads maby a set of double hump

save money and get good set of dart or sportsman II heads. can find used all the time with bells and whistles all done for 600-800. heads and cam make huge differnce in HP. stock crank, stock 350 (5.7 rod), domed piston (can use ohio cast or maybe a keith black hyper), some sportsman II ported 2.05 heads, and a good solid cam and should be able to see 400-450hp. www.oaksahderaceway.com message board had a nice set of used heads on it for reasonable.

Stock Nodular crank, as suggested, will be fine. We got several seasons out of 11:1 motors turning 7000 each race using hypreu pistons and the I-beam Eagle 5.7 rods. I also agree that you should put the money in a decent set of Sports II heads.

not to mention the uncertainty if bare or together. they list parts then have the word bare and sold individual. sounds like a sales gimmick fine print kinda deal.

try calling a few engine builders in your area. they may have a set sitting around that they want to get rid of and a reputable builder is not going to sell you junk because their name is involved. i purchased mine ready to go from Griff engines in NW ohio at the fremont swap meet when he set up there the one year. think i paid 650 for them and basically are what i posted above with some mild port work, bowl blending, gasket match

Thanks but I found a set in tenn. And my dad is coming up from in school and he goes right through where they are and he only wants 500 for them... Is there n e thing he should look for other than the obv. Bent valves... How can u tell they r sportsman ll heads

part number easiest way. have guy give ya part number and research online before even going there is what i would do
