Is it ok to add containment to standard seat? Seams cheaper than buying new seat. Thanks for input.

Cheaper? Yes.Originally posted by late96 View PostIs it ok to add containment to standard seat? Seams cheaper than buying new seat. Thanks for input.
Safer? No.
It's a value proposition after you consider these two factors.
If I made the rules, every car would have a containment seat in it. And people can argue cost all they want but the difference in safety far outweighs the difference in cost between a "standard" seat and a containment seat. A person racing a late model should not have a problem with dropping an extra $400 on a good seat.

For what the add on cost do yourself a favor and just sell yours recoup some of your money and get an Ultrashield Halo or something equal. It pays for itself in one avoided hospital visit.

If installed correctly I don't see an "add on" seat being any less safe. Basically your "add on" pieces are bolted on instead of welded on and you can make it fit your body a lot better.
I've got a lightweight Kirkey seat that I purchased a used Kirkey containment add on for. I added two extra braces to make it solid and its no different than a regular full containment seat.

Does your containment accept a HANS just curious. Most lower end containment seats I never had much luck with HANS without compromising visibility or something

Is this the add-on kit you're using?Originally posted by FlatTire View PostIf installed correctly I don't see an "add on" seat being any less safe. Basically your "add on" pieces are bolted on instead of welded on and you can make it fit your body a lot better.

I used the kirkey ad on kit listed on that link, and it fit very nice.
I am 6'5" 235 lbs, and broad shouldered, and there has not been a standard built full containment seat that I could fit in, unless custom built....which costs a lot of $$$$$ money.
I like it, I would have to say it has to be better than just a regular seat, and no extra protection.I think there should be lifeguards in the genepool.

Matt- no. there is much more support/rigidity to mine, nothing flexes or moves. If that is the type you are talking about then yeah I could see where you are coming from. The add on I have is built like a tank with all sorts of stiffening ribs and covers quite a bit more area.

they were first to pass sfi and their add on will pass all the tests depending on the seat you have. i have been building containment seats for dirt late models for 6 years now. our seat was even used for development of THE RED. rapid extraction device used in many forms of racing as full containment extraction by mant track safety crews. we are a dealer for isp and can help if you need more info or just call kris at ISP 704.455.3060Shocks by BGR army

I hear you taught Scott Bloomquist how to build race cars , jack Cornett how to build engines , Jimmy Owens how to wheel in the slick and you probably taught Wyatt Swain how to tig weld aluminum ... Your a fabricators fabricator , a racers racer , a drivers driver an elite level F1 engineer yet all these skills have made you no money , your car looks like a $hit box and runs 5 seconds a lap off the pace of a crate car .... You claim to have more shock knowledge than Adam Lambert , Scott Keyser , Jason Young and Gary Winger combined but then you say you run welded bearing dual tube shocks because it's all you can afford ... Man I would love to (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) your mouth for you
