Having to shim flywheel

tried two different starters and wouldn't engauge. Was told i need to shim the flywheel. My question is, how do I know how much to shim it?

The majority of the time the problem is that fitting next to the starter not being pumped full of grease

what kind of bell do you have?

have you tried to pry the idler gear forward to see if it will engage?

Had a similar issue few years ago pumped it full grease problem solved

flywheel shim

Brinn says .040" to .070" between idler and flywheel. The information is in the tech section of the brinn website .

Often over looked and most are too far away without some shims but will work decent with a new starter and clean or lubed idler.

I have found that using a dry lubricant will work much better then grease or WD-40 as it gets gritty really fast and will cause the idler to hang up. Try some dry graphite or similar dry lube instead.

Plus make sure you are using the same brand Flywheel as the Bell Housing they do not enter change very well and going to ruin flywheel.

Both are berts but will try grease and lube. I had a modified toyota starter on it for my crate motor and it engages fine but not strong enough for my steel block limited motor.

Warped bell housing did it for me. Got a new one and did not need any shims after that.
