Smoke puffs and a little flame out of the exhaust

    I have a 1995 SOHC dodge neon,2 door, manual.
Last year we had problems with the engine getting hot and bogging down and misfiring. We changed the coil pack and spark plugs. This year it hasn't bogged down or missed, but towards the end of the race(dirt track, 3/8 mile circle, 12-15 laps) it puffs out smoke and last week even blew out a flame or two. It happens when I let off going into the corner. It seems to be running fine other than that. Radiator was full of water after the race. Everything is pretty much stock. We got an error code of P1491, don't know if that would have anything to do with it. Any ideas?

P1491 has to do with you radiator fan. Google that code and you'll see its a common problem with Dodge/Chrysler.

hard wire the fan to a toggle switch and check your IAT sensor and wires/plug-in to be sure they are not broke.
