For (2) decades, I've been running roller cams in our '71-'74 2.0L Pinto engines. The roller-follower of choice has been the 2.3L with its ~1.76:1 ratio. I'm helping with an upgrade to a couple of 2.0L Pinto/Capri engines that are required to run a solid-follower on the cam. The ratio for the stock 2.0L solid-follower is ~1.6:1. I want to investigate the possibility of using the 2.3L solid-follower, which I understand has a ratio of ~1.74:1. I have (2) basic questions. #1......Has anyone successfully used the 2.3L solid-follower, with its higher lift ratio, on a 2.0L solid cam? #2...... using your dial-caliper, can someone tell me the width, 'between the rails', at the tip of a 2.3L solid follower with its 1.74:1 ratio? Most cam lifts are based on a 1.65 or 1.66 ratio for the 2.3 follower. I have a follower here at work somplace I will look and get the measurement off it if I can find it.

Thanks Headhunter..... I appreciate your quick effort. I have a meeting tomorrow with the 2.0L engine builder, and we'll be discussing his valvetrain. BTW..... I have a CRANE cam card whose 'Engine Ident' says: '1974-1987 Ford 4-Cylinder SOHC 2300 CC & 1982-1987 2000 CC' , which states a 'Rocker Arm Ratio' of 1.742:1. If that ratio is even close to true, that's why I'm considering trying the 2300 solid-follower on the '71-'74 2.0L Ford. However..... could that be the ratio for a roller-follower on the 2300? Did Ford begin to use roller-followers on the 2300 way back in 1974? When did Ford quit using the solid-follower on the 2300? If ever. If you smart gents could chase down the timeline when the roller-follower was first used on the 2300, maybe my question(s) could be answered. -Dave-

Dave, How are you? been a while...
To answer your question on the solid follower on 74 2300,No, they never did use a solid follower. All the 2300 I took apart at the yard, never were solid. Ford to my knowledge started to put in hyd roller followers in the very late 80s in Rangers and some mustangs. All the 8 plug head 2300s were hyd rollers. By the 90s almost all of them were hyd rollers. I use to have a lot of that stuff. I cant give you measurments.

Just some theoretical thoughts about the Ford OHC rockers..............Won't the rocker ratio be influenced greatly by the relative position of the valve,cam and lash adjuster.IE what gives 1.74 in a 2300 might not be the same if used in a Pinto 2.0? Also amazing how much rocker ratio in these changes with valve length: shorter valve length causes raising lash adjuster which moves the contact patch closer to the fulcrum,raising the ratio.
I usually figure we get around 1.7 at max lift once geometry is correct.Rocker ratio changes as the cam rotates but I assume everybody publishes rocker ratio at max lift.
We have run exclusively flat tappet/solid lash adjusters on these for years.IMHO 7MM stems and beehives are the only way to go especially as they are gentle on cams and followers because of the lighter spring rates needed.Mass of valves,retainers,keepers WAY lighter even running all steel items. If you are planning a build I'd recommend serious consideration of the 7MM.

I do not have one follower left either here at work or at home. I had at least 3-4 sets and cant find one.
