Aftermarket Distributors

Im new to all this racing stuff, what is the difference between aftermarket and stock distributors? What makes a aftermarket distributor better or worse? What is the science that makes them better? If I buy a ,lets see, MSD distributor what advantages will I have? What can I buy WITH a aftermarket distributor to make it better? Coil? Ignition Box? Ect?
