Picked up a 77 Pinto to build for my 14yr old. Here are the engine rules. Any advice on what must be done VS high end options would be very helpful. Engine Specifications: A (4) cylinder family to family, carbureted, naturally aspirated engine with asingle camshaft. A maximum of (2500) cc, no engine stroke changes allowed. Engine may be bored. Flat top or dish pistons only. Head may be milled, 3 angle valve jobs allowed. No port and polish, solid lift cams are allowed. Carburetor may be a 500 CFM maximum with no modifications. No dry sump system allowed. No adjustable cam gear allowed. No aluminum or aftermarket heads are allowed, (unless OEM equipped.) Engines must pull 14†of vacuumThanks, LeonWill be racing Lamar, CO

they are trying to limit the amount you shave off the heads by saying no adjustable gears. you can get around that by having a cam ground to use a stock gear. give jerry at schneiders a call and tell him what your rules are and he can grind a cam for you. i have a hyd he ground for 14in rules and it pulls like you won't believe. hyd, 8000+. just have someone that knows how to set up a ford 2300 do your head work. if your track is a 1/4 mile or less think about using a 350 instead of a 500. much better throttle response on starts and out of the corners.

Run a standard bore Ranger 2.5 block & crank to meet their "no engine stroke changes allowed" rule. Run aftermarket 5.7" rods and flat top pistons. The engine size increase will pull more vacuum for any given camshaft. That will let you get away with running a slightly larger cam than a 2300... Mill the head 'till it measures about 3.655" from the valvecover rail to the deck of the head which will get the head down to around 40cc chambers, and retard the cam timing about 12 degrees. Each tooth on the cam gear = ~19deg., so you would advance the cam 1 hole tooth, and the end result would be roughly 7deg. of advance on the cam. Then you would order our E2263 cam and ask to have it ground 3 degrees retarded (it will have to be a custom grind to have the lobes ground retarded 3 deg.). The end result will be a cam that's installed roughly 4 degrees advanced when you degree it in.
With the 2500, and the cam/ head done as I recommended, you will have a car that drives well, restarts and exits corners better than anything else, should turn around 7500ish rpm, and pass your 14" of vacuum rule!
