Flywheel questions.

I bought a older used Tilton clutch setup for my 2.3 Ford. The ring gear has been re welded and looked pretty straight. I didn't check run out on the ring gear when I changed the flywheel and the starter is very grindy sounding and will kick out when I try and start it. It reminds me of the time I tried to put a Ranger starter on my escort setup. The starter on it is the same one I used on the Escort flywheel, a stock 2.3 1979 mustang starter.

Question 1. Could the flywheel I put on, the Tilton unit, be a different tooth count than my escort flywheel?

Question 2. Has anyone used this Tilton flywheel and what starter did you use?

I have a Tilton assy and the tooth count on the flywheel is different than a mustang flywheel. It would grind and kickout but i couldn't find the correct starter so I removed it and went with a Goldstar.

Well I answered one of my own questions. The tilton tooth count is 135 and the stock escort was 132. I know there are 2 starters. One 9 tooth and one 10 tooth. I do have a 10 tooth i am going to try using tomorrow since I have the 9 tooth on there now. But I have run across lots of info about this subject on several types of flywheels and there are many that have starter problems.

U need a pinto starter.. don't know part # off the top of my head but oriellys can help u tell them u need the 135 tooth pinto starter laate 70 model it fixed my starter issues

Thanks for the info guys. I bought one for a 74 Mmustang II 2.0 and it's what I needed. Took them a week to get one at my local parts store. Autozone and Advanced couldn't even order them.
