light weight flywheel ?

tore the teeth off the stock flywheel this week on my mustang . So im looking a new flywheel, friend told me a escort 1991 16lb flywheel will work but with a stock clutch kit and starter work with this flywheel??.....is there another better flywheel out there that will work with a mustang...no rules on flywheel in my class just looking something under $75 ..working on a budget

Yes 91-96 escort 1.9L flywheel will work with mustang clutch parts, I used that setup for a few years.

You WILL need shorter flywheel bolts, the mustang bolts will bottom out & NOT tighten fully.

So the a escort flywheel is lighter than the stock mustang flywheel is that what i am reading. And what does this help on a 2.3 rev easyer or what? thanks

Yes the 1.9 flywheel is lighter and the engine will rev faster and the more weight you can get off of the rear of the crank the better. Not nearly as light as the aftermarket flywheel assemblies (like Tilton, Ram, Goldstar, Quartermaster) but it's a fraction of the price and you can get everything needed at the local parts store. Speedway sells one for around 300 dollars that is a lighter version at around 12 lbs and is the same as the escort wheel so the stock 1.9 pressure plate and clutch disk will work. But if your rules don't state stock flywheel and pressure plate you are better off finding a used Goldstar or similar unit in my opinion.

The 91-96 1.9L escort clutch disc has a different spline so it will not work on a 2.3L.

Now that you mention that I remember having to sit there with my parts guys and go through the computer to find the right disk that was something like 7 and 1/2 inch and 23 spline? Don't remember what it was actually for though. That's been about 6 years ago or more.

I believe some of the early model Pinto, 70-72 had a 7 1/2 - 23 spline clutch disc. Later years were 8 1/2 - 23 spline. Parts man may be able to get a 7 1/2 if that is what you need.

Most older ford RWD 4 speeds were 23 spline.

The 70 -72 2.0 is 10.4 lbs..Its a 23 spline.. have it drilled to fit the 2.3 crank. Simple.... light...Use the 2.0 clutch and pressure plate.
