Thinking of Running the CT 525 next year. Who makes the lightest Chassis that is still safe? Preferably 4-bar rear. Is a Chevelle stub Lighter than Metric? If I am going for the light weight advantage, Don't want to start off in the hole 40 or 50 Lbs. Know what I mean?

those hughes cars look pretty light... i know TRE is light as well.
I dont think you have to worry about being over weight w/ just about any manu on the market right now. The Alum block is a big difference and will allow you to take weight off the rear as well

Yep, Hughes are quite a bit lighter overall but think it's more from Jason using 16 gallon cell VS 26 or 32. Friend of mine sold his Hughes recently and picked up a Pierce for local stuff but said he was surprised how much less lead he could use. I think a lot of that was the fuel cell size though... If you use 10 gallons of fuel more on a pierce to get percentages right thats @ 80 lbs. of lead. And know I'm not worried about overweight but would like to use 125 to 150 Lbs. lead for moving around and up and down.Originally posted by powerslide View Postthose hughes cars look pretty light... i know TRE is light as well.

4130 CM would be a good idea. If I remember right they let you go 1/4" Dia smaller where ever you use chromemoly. But would that stiffen the chassis too much?Originally posted by not clamped up View PostI think GRT builds a chromemoly car, whatever way you go make sure its tig welded not migged if is chrome.

I know the Carr Racing Chassis out in california is 2100 lbs with a 32 gal cell filled to 20 gal. 4 bar, bowtie block, on a chevelle clip. All DOM tubing.... and very safe.....

Nice website! It's too bad we do our best not to do anything with California...Sorry. Tell Joe to get his butt back to Missouri. Looks like he is wasting his talent out there.Originally posted by Car12 View PostI know the Carr Racing Chassis out in california is 2100 lbs with a 32 gal cell filled to 20 gal. 4 bar, bowtie block, on a chevelle clip. You have to consider all of the bolt on parts. They are what cause the most difference in weight. Most all of the chassis are going to weigh close to the same, if they are the same type of suspension.Leaf chassis are lighter than 4 link because there are less brackets. Some chassis have more options on thier brackets which add weight. Some chassis builders dont put steel floor pans and door plates which should be manditory IMO. There is about 6 lbs difference in a 1 1/2 cage verses a 1 3/4 cage. All you can save by down sizing every bar 1 size in wall thickness is 10 or 12 lbs, but they will crack easier.Smaller diameter tubing is lighter but flexes a lot more. Also remember that any chassis with thinner tubing and/or smaller diameter tubing will not last as long. The biggest difference we see in total car weight, besides the driver is the motors and the amount of fuel carried. What I am saying is you might save 25 lbs on a chassis by making it a throw away, but there is a whole lot more to save on motors, trannys, battery, and other bolt on components, without sacrificing safety and chassis longgevity.Last edited by HEAVY DUTY; 10-21-2011, 04:42 PM.

My Shaw car was 2100 in the same trim.Curious that we spend more time congratulating people who have succeeded than encouraging people who have not.
