claim or crate

Our track is going to imca northern sportmods. I was wondering how much horsepower you could get out of a crate vs a claim engine. Also the pros and cons for each. Thanks in advance.

If your going IMCA rules crate all the way and heres why NO CLAIM 4brl carb and cost if you have nothing to start with.A new crate is under 4k and will last 2 or 3 seasons at 1 night a week if you take care of it.Claim motors can be claimed for less then it costs for the block and head prep work alone.Check out what some engine builders charge for imca sportmodmotors.I seen a guy with a bunch of parts including block pistons and rods pay 4 k for the so called claim motor last year which is cheap compared to 8k at a well noted builders site says.We have sportmods here and cratemotors dominate from what I see but there are some good claim cars too! Personal preference maybe???

I had a crate in my IMCA sportmod and highly recommend it. Very reliable, cheap, easy to maintain and they will lat 60-80 races no problem. I bought mine with 10 races on it for $2,500 and was beating claimer motors that cost $6,000, to me its a no brainer.

Crate has one advantage, 4bbl
Claim has many:
Desired camshaft
Ability to repair for little to nothing
Ability to gear the car different
Downside: Claim. You can be bought. Most of the time, the Crate gets the upper hand because guy's are not willing to work on the claim engine hard enough.

My take on it anyways. If you like building your own engines and having some skin in the game, I'd go with a claim.

My 602 crate is on its 7th year without a rebuild. Just spark plugs, valve springs, and new oil. it might be a little down on power, but I am STILL beating claim motors...

You haven't raced around here then. A crate that old would have trouble getting off the trailer!

If you just want to buy something and go racing, Crate. If you want to do the research and build something you can repair, Claim.

Sobbing is a crate frye is a claim. both are winning plenty. lariviaere is a claim as well.

I think you guys are mistaken w/ the cost of crates. The initial start up cost of a crate is a bit higher then what was said. Did you forget about how much you spent on a new clutch to accept the one piece rear main? How about that 1800 dollar carb that is legal to run? Replacing that junk distributor they put in there? It all adds up and I've also seen ALOT of crates spill their guts not even half way thru the season... Then what? Buy another for 3400... Food for thought.. Its all about the camshaft!!! Ask me about my camshafts because I grind my own.
