Smaller? If anything, make it 4" or 5". Gotta do something to even the playing field. Crates are dominating right now. Maybe crates add 50#'s front of midplate,,, eliminate the spoiler and add 25#'s to front.. Not sure what the answer is but they have to change some rules. I do not want to buy a crate. Unfortunately, like many have already found out, you have to in order to be competitive. Its not an OPTION at this point, which is why they brought the crate in to begin with,, as an option. Hopefully ROOT realizes that the good intentions of IMCA at this point, have failed.. Hopefully ROOT and IMCA can swallow their pride and change some rules and even up the playing field.
IMCA Open motor guys. Question about this years performance.

There will be no major changes for 2014 other then some things that once were a #2 infraction in the rule book (deficiency slip) will now be a dq. If you have a 2013 book, you can build your cars off of that according to Bretts recent news letter and be good to go as far as the major things are concerned, Thanks, Sean Walker IMCA IMS tech.

How many big shows were won with open motors Jeff? How many were won with a crate?
Weekly shows are easier to compete with an open motor at 3/8 and smaller tracks. 1/2 mile and bigger you better have a crate or you're just fighting an uphill battle. That battle can be won but it would sure be a lot easier if you had a crate.

That is ture. However those guys are not switching to crates due to the cheaper cost. They are switching because with the current rules the crate is faster on larger tracks as well as smaller tracks in slick conditions.
They aren't stupid. The guys with unlimited funds have a car set up with each engine and pick which one they want to run based on the track and expected track condition.

Instead of everybody complaining about this 604 crate why don't you have your engine built to match the crate performance wise and yes an open engine could be built for 5500 and have the same reliability. Keep a bunch of gear out of the car like the crates are it maybe isnt necesarry to run over 7000 and dont build an engine with big cubes the crate has proven you can only hook up 450 hp anyway so why build an engine with 600? Don't use lightweight parts or a camshaft with a 106 or tighter lobe seperation engines built this way with restricted tires will spin them very easy in the slick. Go with a camshaft that has a 110 or 112 lobe seperation (as this will produce very broad and driveable torque) and duration that isnt over 240 or 250 @.050 a Keep compression to 11:1 or less as good power can still be made at this compression and still have reliability without spending a lot of money on the bottom end. An engine can be built to match the crate if GM can builld them so can a professional engine builder point blank.

Crates have a roller cam with a profile that cant be mach with a flat tappet, aluman head lighter runs cooler . gives you rear % but thats not about the moter its about the raer spoler that is the advang and light car rear %
THE BIG probelm will be cheting and will come to a head the end of next year or 2015
my opinion only thanks for reading

Is there anyone building a crate specific mod, it appears some late models are being built strictly for the crate engine. Thanks

Someone told me there was a crate specific mod already being built and I was just wondering if anyone else had heard or seen it. The one that told me about it, has seen it run and said it was very impressive. ThanksLast edited by washeduptoo; 11-03-2013, 08:44 AM.

Whats your car number?
I have a 22 gallon cell, battery by transmission and 35 lbs a few inches behind my distributor. I still cant get the rear wt down low enough.
Im hoping to get a new chassis built in jan with big tubing front end to further reduce rear. 440 hp doesn't need the 59 rear my car had.Last edited by lov2race; 11-03-2013, 09:53 AM.

This guy has got it right. With $8000.00 engines all you are doing is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Way too expensive to be competitive week in and week out for the average schmo.Originally posted by dukesracin View PostWell said.......this class is doomed to price out weekly racers just like the Supers. Another thing is when I was a kid a Late model was a camaro all modified out with big tires......now late model is a sophisticated machine costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The modifieds I watched early on were pieced together from junkyard cars and parts, the motors were hopped up stockers, the tires were hard, and the racing was good....every week! Just like NASCAR should do.......dirt racing sanction bodies should put the stock back into stock car racing at local dirt tracks!Member of the Luxemburg Speedway Hall of Fame

Just my opinion and observation but I see imca wanting to keep the crate more competitive because it lowers the cost of racing. There trying to keep it affordable for the average weekend racer without major money backing or engine sponsors to come and have a chance at winning and I feel the 6k crate is doing this. Its beating 10k + motors at some races!

Know 1 guy that runs a crate. When he added in the "special carb, fuel pump and headers" that you need to get the most out of it like the big name drivers are doing , it now becomes real close to a $8000.00 motor. JMO
