Lugnut torque on modifieds

What does everyone torque their Lugnuts at and why is this so important.

Depends on the wheel manufacturer. I use Bassett and they call for 85 ft/lbs. It is important due to fastener stretch for correct clamping force. Not too tight or too loose. A lot of guys just hammer them on with an impact. This leads to uneven torque and over torque. The wheels actually get hot when racing and if they are clamped unevenly or over torqued they will warp. It may not be much but it adds up over time. You might be able to get away with hammering them down every time. Who knows.

90lb/ft is what we torqued all of our wheels down to.

Hold a straightedge against wheel mounting surface. wheel actually seats against area outside lug bolt circle. Used to be that some hubs did not hit this area, leading to wheel failure. bolt torque actually compresses the void around the lug bolts helping maintain clamp force as wheel heats from brakes/ etc.
