    Anyone measure oil during change?

I wanted to get some opinions on this before I decided to listen to my carb builder. I'm running Gibbs XP1 in my 602 crate. I'll run 2 races, change filter, and add fresh quart. After 3 times (6 races total), I'll drop it all and put in all new. I was told to measure how much oil I remove when I dump it all and only put that much back in. I've always put in a full 8 quarts in my race motors after changing the oil. I am told that there is at least 1 quart of oil that never comes out during an oil change. Everyone is big on every little edge on these crate motors, but I am not interested in running it low on oil at all.

    Anyone do it this way?

do the crates have a provision for a dipstick or level check plug?

I agree with Stockcar5 about your oil changes. We run XP-3 in our 422" all aluminum SB2.2 and we change the 2 qt filter every 3 races and the oil at about 500-600 laps...10-12 races....Done this for awhile and everything has been great...

should messure how much it takes to fill oil to proper level,...then messure when drained,..that give you a ball park on any oil consumtion issues,..id think you get more laps on any oil than 6 races,..

I might try extending the life of the oil a little then. I was just going off what I've been told to do. I've always ran 2 nights before on the non-synthetic oils. I'll try to get around the 500 lap mark instead.

On a completely different side note, I had an issue with a power steering tank. The bung for the return line was welded in 90 degrees off, so 1 outlet was pointing down while the other was pointing straight up. This was causing a major leak anytime I started the car. I put a new tank on and no issues, but I thought I'd see what others are running for powersteering fluid. Also, do you fill up to where the return comes in or do you cover the return with fluid to keep down the turbulance?

I think those pans have a check plug dont they? I would just go by that as far as refilling it. But it wouldnt scare me to leave it 1/2 qt even 1 qt low. There are times running a little low can help lower oil temps because it gets the oil farther away from the crank, and should also reduce windage HP losses as well. We used to run a 7 qt pan 1/2 qt low and never had a oil pressure problem, but it did noticeably help oil temps.

Make sure you look at laps per night too. Somebody running 6 nights at 20 laps is different than 6 nights at 50 laps. I would agree though, if you arent running in really dusty conditions, dont overheat the motor terribly, and keep the oil fairly clean i think you could go longer than 6 nights.
