My brother-in-law hired a painter last year based on the lowest bid, then got hit with extra charges for patching walls and a second coat. Now I'm about to paint our living room and hallway in Phoenix and I'm nervous. What should I look for in an estimate so nothing sneaks in later? Recommendations for honest painters are welcome.
How to read a painting estimate

Before accepting any quote, I'd make sure every detail is written down, not just the total price. We once had a painter leave wall repairs out of the estimate, and the final bill was noticeably higher than expected. Ask whether prep work, patching, primer, number of coats, paint and cleanup are included, plus how extra work is approved. I found this guide useful for understanding interior painting costs: how much do interior painters charge per hour . I'd also compare a couple of itemised quotes and check recent local reviews.
