winters rear internal interchangeability?

On the old winters or frankland rear ends, with the large cover, is the lower shaft and bearings the same as the newer lightweight style with the flat cover? I have an old boat anchor rear, spare aluminum spool, and was thinking if I could find a bare center section could make a lighter newer style rear out of the two. Anyone ever done this?

all the internals and the side bells are interchangible between the two brands and between the older full size q.c and the newer full size q.c. hope this helps
