Brake problem

I have a 2002 silverado 1500 HD 4X4.6.0 V-8 With brake problems... When you go to stop the pedal feels fine. As you are almost stopped the pedal will pulse up and down and will not stop. I have had the rotors turned, new pads all around,and replaced one rotor. And still doing it.... I am lost... Anybody had this problem? Any help would be great. Thanks....

There was an issue witht he anti lock brake modulator on some of the years. I would check it out as that is what it sound like.

I have looked on line about it. They say you can disconnect the ABS system by pulling the fuse. Where is the fuse? Can you drive it safely without the ABS system.

You have an ABS issue. What is happening is that one of your wheel speed sensor signals are dropping out at low speeds. When this happens the ABS thinks that wheel just locked up and it goes into an ABS stop. Its more then likely one of the front wheel speed sensors that are causing the issue.

You can pull the ABS fuse to see if the problem stops. The Power distribution center under the hood is where you want to look. The cover for the box should be labled and you should see a fuse or two for the ABS.

If pulling the fuse stops the problem I strongly sugest getting the ABS system fixed and working correctly. Eric

You have a few options, 1. pull the large 30amp IIRC ABS fuse in the fuse box under the hood, and don't worry about having ABS brakes, BASE brakes will not be affected. 2. Pull the front caliper's and rotors, take the allen head bolt out of the wheel speed sensor and with a pair of pliers try and pull the wheel speed sensor out of the wheel bearing sometimes they are pretty tight and the end breaks off, no big deal you can buy new ones. Now with the sensor out, remove the rust buildup around the hole that sensor goes in, also clean the rust off the sensor itself. Grease it up good and reinstall, your done. OR 3. Replace both front wheel bearings, your done.

What is making that grinding noise when I am almost stopped? That is why I thought it was my brake pads. I guess I will pull the fuse first and make sure it is not the bearings...Thanks.

I pulled the 60 amp ABS fuse in the box under the hood. Drove it around the block, brakes worked fine no grinding noise. Brake light and the ABS light is on. I will try to clean the sensor later. Thanks....Mark

The "grinding" noise is the ABS pump motor and actuators operating. The warning lights will remain on with the fuse out and even after you put it back it it might take several drive cycles for the light to clear itself.

If you clean it, make sure you clean the mounting surface that the sensor seats against. What you are trying to accomplish is to get the sensor down farther into the wheel bearing to allow the sensor to create a stronger signal. Eric

Bump. I am experiencing a brake problem as well. I felt it when I was about to go out and grab a drink. I check the stoplight or brake light and it was okay. Anyway, I might grab a brake fluid and check that is problem.

I ended up changing the hubs.... Fixed the problem.
