we run an MSD Dizzy setup. most reliable we have found. its funny because the guy that we get our motor parts from runs an A-Mod and he is a top points guy every year and he runs the HEI unit that comes on the GM 602-604 Crate Motors. he has never had a problem. only thing he does it but a bronze gear on it.

The gear is dependent on the type of cam you are running and what it is made out of. The HEI is a good distributor BUT the stock and many stock replacement types do not have an advance stop and at high RPM the timing just keeps advancing.

The 602 distributor is like that (the 604 does not come with a dist.), that is why many run them locked, well that and you dont have them get stuck and melt the engine. You can lock the advance with a small plate, change the module and coil and you will have a great cheap distributor.
