Head Recommendation

Putting together a 358 for a pavement modified. I need advise on what heads to use. Compression will be in the 12 -12.5 to 1 range. Roller cam. I have a .645/.630 264/268 that will use if it is a good match for this motor. I'd like to turn 7800-8000rpm.

Engine rules are simple...One carb, wet sump, iron block, race gas. The 8" tire is the limiting factor.

I'm not sure what heads to use. I'd like to stay with standard rockers.

Any input is appreciated.

Bowtie Vortec is the best bang for the buck, and the lightest by far

Iron or Alum. heads? If Iron I would agree with hog the bowtie vortecs are hard to beat. Alum. there are many choices depending on the cubic dollar, Dart, AFR, brodix, all-pro etc. You would want alittle less duration for a 358 at those rpms, or turn it 8500 or so.

I was thinking aluminum heads for weight savings and more choices. What size heads should I be looking at? 210? 230?

Dollars are relative. Willing to pay for performance.

You know, I weighed them before I put them on, but I didn't write it down, but seems like I remember at least 8lbs lighter each (before milling) than a Dart Iron Eagle.

And the more you mill them the lighter they get (of course)

We angle milled ours to 47cc

their best feature is the broad torque band, they come on under 3000 and stay flat past 6300

If you can run aluminum.....I would go with a Dart Pro 1. Best there is for a simple 23 degree deal. Runner size would depend on what carb you have.

how much did you have to mill the vortec bowties to get them to 47cc? how thin did the deck end up?

For a gas 358 with a relatively low compression, I like the AFR 210's or the Pro 1 215.

Idk how much mathmatically, because it was done by others, but it was so much, that we had to weld up the spark plug coolant holes prior to milling (so they wouldnt spider)

The decks were still pretty substantial afterword, more than a stock 062 head, and we haven't had any issue's, even with our 15.75:1 compression
