High oil temps

Your water is 190* and your oil is 300*???
If that is correct you have a more serious problem than an oil cooler will solve. Oil coolers can usually knockdown about 20-30 for a good one 40-50 degrees of heat for a real good one...and that is still not enough in your case.
Is the engine pretty new? Do you know if the rear thrust was checked on the engine and if the mains were fitted and what the clearances were? If it was me I would cut apart the oil filter to see if there is any bearing material in there. Use a sharp set of tin snips and cut it close to the end where it screws on to the block.
What kind of engine is it?

A good oil cooler can do the job. We were running a 377" wet sump engine in our DLM and with in 5 laps on a hooked up track, our oil temp was 290-300* and water temp was 200* We installed a 2 qt remote filter and a Seatrab cooler and the next week out, the water was 200* and oil temp 240*. never saw over 240-245* oil temp again...

High oil temps
we had this one time and we found with a large radius crank some brands of rod bearings are just a bit too wide ( even though we got the narrow ones). pull a rod bearing or 2 and see if its rubbing up against the radius, you'll see the edge of the bearing all shinned up. our oil will still run up near 280 if its hammer down ride the cushion type track (no cooler)

Before you do anything crazy, check the engine front to back mounted angle! The angle should at least 5 degrees down to the rear of the engine. You could just have a oil windage problem. This will give you those strange numbers like that. Just sayin. Good luck.

Whats your reference for this 5 degrees down?Originally posted by Graff Spee View PostBefore you do anything crazy, check the engine front to back mounted angle! On my Rambler engine draiback is critical...I reference mine off the valve cover flange of the head.....Originally posted by stock car driver View PostWhats your reference for this 5 degrees down?BIG Headers

Not sure why youve entered this conversation with rambler garble. But the amc oil issue isnt from drain back its a matter of not having enough oil for huge pump amc motors run, also the pick up configuration doesnt allow it to pick up all the oil.Originally posted by Hurst390 View PostOn my Rambler engine draiback is critical...I reference mine off the valve cover flange of the head.....
The best fix is the floating pick up in a stock pan or a larger sump pan. Milodon has the pan and floating pick up as well as external pick up options.
Motor angle doesnt matter in a AMC, mine doesnt loose oil to the rockers until the motor is about 70-80 degrees from level....
My jeepster is sitting at the top of this hill and I didnt lose pressure except the one time I got laid over on my side right where that other jeepster is for a extended period of time.

About that 5 degrees down deal. I read that in a old chevy service manual. I then put a protractor on a carb flange once and saw it was at 5 degrees. That made me remember the whole thing. I also once had my engine just a touch down in front and had those same high oil temp problems. I put a cooler on it and everything. Once I set the engine down in back the oil temp problem was gone.

Glad to see an AMC guy on here...unfortunetly you made one mistake..drainback is a major problem..but yes you are correct on the pan volumes....when you crank one up to 8500 in that jeep then we can discuss it further....As for bringing up a Rambler engine..Is because of how I reference the angle of my engine....Why would you need to take issue with that?Originally posted by stock car driver View PostNot sure why youve entered this conversation with rambler garble. AMC motors have oiling issues, what causes them is debatable.
The angle the motor is mounted at isnt a contributing factor....
I dont see mods, late models or any other mid plate mounted motor car mounting the motors at a angle around here.
Ive mounted my race car motors LEVEL and never had issues.
The guy who says he measured 5 degrees on the carb mounting flange was likely reading the 5 degrees the wrong way since the intakes have angle built into them.
