Engine build question.

Hey guys. If you were going to build an engine for a b mod, what would you use. I will cut and paste the rules.We will run on a 1/4 mile track that is pretty slick.ENGINE:

23. Can mix and match frames and motors. 360 c.u. max. Factory OEM block. No roller cams.

24. No 400ci block..

24. Heads: Aftermarket or angle plugs allowed. No aluminum heads. Chevy 23°. Ford 22°. Max 12.5 to 1’ compression.

25. Intakes and carburetors: Holley 500 cfm 2-barrel #4412 only, No 4-barrels. No modifications. Must pass gauge inspection. Removal of choke assembly and air horn only. No other alterations allowed. Aluminum one-piece sand-cast intakes allowed. Cast iron intakes allowed. One 2” adapter allowed. Air cleaner maximum height from air horn base 5”

26. 1.5 Chevy or 1.6 Ford ratio rockers. No shaft rockers. Stud girdles allowed.

27. Any distributor allowed. No mag or crank trigger. MSD allowed.

28. 602 Chevrolet Crate engine allowed.

29. Stock journal size. 3.48 stroke Chevy.

30. Any steel oil pan allowed. No dry sumps. Inspection plug recommended in oil pan. No inspection plug and you may be required to remove the pan. Coolers allowed.

31 . No serpentine belts. Cog belts allowed for fuel pump only.

32. Starter must mount in stock location. Must have steel bell housing.
Car has to weigh 2500 lbs and we are on e mods with 3 link rear suspension. Thanks for any info guys.

Hey Jeff. Thanks for the info. What cc would you recommend and would you have them ported. We have to run a stock 500 holley and only 12.5 compression.

Do they have a +/- on the valve angle that you did not list? If not then having a set of Vortec heads angle milled will put you at less than 23 degrees and illegal.

Hello Ego. 23 degree for chevy and 22 degree for ford. They said no tampering with valve angle although we can angle mill flat mill etc.Just cant physicall change angle in head from say 23 degree to 21 or so.

Angle milling them will change the valve angle of the head. Typical rule book, say one thing then contradict it a few rules later.
I would contact a head specialist and find what head you can have angle milled the most to get the chamber down and roll it over the most that you can to better the angle of the intake runners. This will make more power even if you have to run a dish piston to get 12.5:1.

Ego you are right in the way the rules are interpeted.As long as the rules say angle milling is allowed then he would be safe as long as there is no rule on how much they can be angle milled.After all when you angle mill a head your not changing the valve angle in the head,just the head angle.For those rules I would do a set of 200cc Darts with 33cc chambers and end up with 20* valve angle.

that would be illegal. you'd have well over 12.5 to 1 compression.

i had my vortec bowties welded and milled by brzezinski and ended up with a 48cc chamber. looks like you would need about 50cc to be at 12.5 to 1 which im sure they can do.

as for an intake, if it were me i'd run a edelbrock 2814 if hood clearance isnt a concern.

Because the chambers are 33cc doesn't mean you would have over 12.5 to 1 compression.You can have whatever compression you want by using the right piston.

so your suggestion is to spend a bunch of money to mill the heads to an extreme which also makes them very fragile and then spend even MORE money on a dish piston to REDUCE the compression back to a legal amount? LOL. good thing you only sell parts and dont actually build engines...

Living..it is common knowlege. How much hp do you think its worth in a 2bbl b mod motor. You have testing to back your claims? Will the hp increase be worth the extra $2000+ terry is trying to get the guy to spend?

Stock Car Driver,
The last set that HVH did for me was a set of EQ's
Joe at HVH said they were better than the Darts.He furnished the castings and did all the work for $2500.00 They were ported,angle milled,head bolts redrilled and spot faced,intake and exhaust surfaces were corrected back to stock angles.He didn't furnish any parts except head castings and intake seats.I'm not trying to get the guy to spend anything.Just answering a guestion.

I appreciate all the advice.Didn't mean to cause a riff between anyone. Just trying to get an honest opinion. I spent enough on shocks / springs etc to build five street stock suspensions, and then i talked to stock car driver and he helped me get a car that can run in front every nite.Id rather not spend 7000.00 on heads lol, but i will spend what it takes to get a car that is capable of winning. When i take my car out now, i know its capable of winning every nite. If we dont, its not because of power or chassis components. I know you cant win every nite but when i go to the track, i plan on winning. Sounds like the vortec heads are the way to go. I heard the guy that usually runs second most weeks around here has out of the box dart iron eagles at 49 cc. He is a good driver and has good chassis's so maybe thats why.I appreciate all the info guys.
