    TH350 tranny

so swapped out 2.41 gears (ran in 1st worked fine) to 4.10. planned to run second to get the revs up and little more help get off the corner, get to track and car wont shift. stays in first and just over revs. so come to find out governor is completely stripped and tranny has manual valve body. replaced governor, my question is do run direct in 2nd or have to shift from 1st to 2nd??? any way to check without dropping pan that 2nd gear is there and operational....counting driveshaft rotation or???TIA

You need to find a friend at a local AT shop to get your problems worked out or purchase a good Oval Track racing automatic transmission.

You should be able to shift all 3 gears in a TH-350. If you have a smart trans guy you can adapt a lot of LW Racing stuff into your gear box. It won't be cheap but it is worth at least a second per lap on 3/8 mile track.

We used to have a lot of money in ours because there were not many rules on the transmissions and a whole lot of engine rules. Between rear ends and transmissions we found about 40RWHP.

I think I still have 3-4 of them transmissions around cause I still have 3-4 of the trucks and engines.

When we ran our truck at Road Atlanta we passed about 1/2 of the ASA 604 Late-Model Cars that were racing there at the same time as we were. If the race was a couple laps more we would have passed all of the ASA cars as they were blocking the hell out of us. David Elliott was driving the truck for me and we were Sponsored by Bill Heard Chevrolet and GMPP.

The teeth on the governor are probably ground off on purpose. I do that so the trans wont go to 2nd by accident. The trans maybe also missing 2nd gear parts. That can be done by some builders.
Put the governor back in with a new gear and test drive it. With a converter you could take off in 2nd, but I would start in 1st. Start in first get a little speed up and shift to 2nd. If its there, good, if not, the trans needs to come apart and examined. Make sure not to accidentally shift to 3rd in the race.
