final gear ratio trans in 2nd or just rear gear

Question is I am planning to regear for next year and been talking to a few racers. Some say I need to get a gear and run 2nd gear in trans and buy a new gear for rear? They are saying I will get more torque of the corner.

I currently have a 6:20 in the rear and trans in top gear. Was planning on buying a 6:50 to go in spare carrier. Now after talking to a few people wondering if I am messing up. One problem is I have 5 spare trans most 3 speed but a 4 speed in there. and they are all different lines. So if I gear for one ratio with trans in 2nd and tear trans out may be out of luck unless I am running in high gear.

Anyone got any dyno or proven info?

it will act exactly the same if you run it in second with a lower gear to get it to 6.50 as it will run with a 6.50 and in high gear. There is no advantage to be gained, its a wash. The advantage is, get rid of rotating weight, IE removing gears in the trans, run a Brinn, Light flywheel and clutch assembly, light drive shaft, light rotors and hubs, and light weight gears in the rear. You will get more out of this then trying to run second gear.

tranny will not last as long running in second gear versus running in drive. I would just stay in the direction your going by running the ratio in the gear. Good Luck!

Sorry I think I left out some info. We have a pure stock and have to run a factory stock trans with all gears working.

Several guys are running in 2nd gear and having good luck. I see a loss of power by turning 2nd gear but was just wondering if there was some voodoo I was missing out on?

maybe cheaper for them to get gears that work w/ the trans in 2nd?

most the time some body running 2nd gear is when there running gm rear end an cant get much lower gear than a 4.11 in most gm housing where you can go much lower in a 9 inch rear,...your going in right direction,..don't let what others do change your path!!

Even a stock trans in 4th gear is an one to one with no gearing. When running it in second gear you are adding the friction of 2 more gear sets which will cost power and generate heat in the transmission.
