    305 vs 350

    i understand 350 preffered due to displacement. im running open motor vs alot of crate 602's at my track. open motor is limited to 76cc head 882, 993, 441 etc.... though the open motors are competitive im looking for your opinion on running say a 30 over 305 with the vortec heads???(vortec head allowed when running 305 only)

    im assuming 350 for torque vs the better compression heads?

    Which vortec heads are allowed, any vortec or just street head?

    A 305 will make similar power to a 350 if you can turn it up another 1000-2000rpms, and in the case of a 602 crate you would only need to turn 7500 and you should be able to smoke one in that case. There a plenty of examples of 305's making big power like Sprints and PartsProTrucks.

    I guess to make an adequate comparison I would have to see the complete set of rules to see if there are any drawbacks to the 305 combination like vortec head choices, carb size, cam size , compression limit, intake manifold choices...

        Looks like your rules for 305 engine are the same as our old PARTS Pro 305 rules were except you can run a glide with no weight penalty and we had to run a heavy A$$ Turbo 350, you get a couple better intakes, stock dia spring which is great for me as I have some custom wound with PSI wire. You also get .450 lift only rule on cam, I have a couple unreal grinds for that application as I have done some Limited Lift entry level 305 Spring Car stuff.

        I would have you lapping the 602 crate field with a 305 and Vortec Heads with my .450 lift cam, lifter and spring package. I expect we could turn 7400-7600 easy. I know a good glide guy and our glides were almost 40HP at the rear wheels in Late-Model until they were outlawed.

        We used to turn 6700 with our 2101 manifolds, 4412carb, and 105# seat pressure with a WG Hydraullic cam and lifters and our best engines were pretty close to 500HP. We only got .030 and you get .060 which will pick up head flow another 10-15 cfms.

        Believe it or not the stock rockers might be one of the more expensive items to get hold of. I used to get some custom stamped out of 4340 material and had to order 1000 at a time but they were indestructible. I sold of the balance of what I had on hand to NHRA Stock racers for $500 set. The old dude that made them for me passed away with cancer and I never went looking for another vendor after that. We ran them up to 8500 and about 350# springs with no problems. With rocker studs guide plates and poly locks we should be fine because we had to run stock press in rockers no plates and groove stock type balls with stock type lock nuts...

          I would turn a 305 about 15,000 RPM with all stock internals. I sell a water pump and bolt on valve covers that will free up over 100 horse. I worked on a blend of paint to seal the outside of the motor to retain nuclear heat as well.

            Amazing!
            Must be his super special oil that created enough friction to keep the studs from pulling straight out as you can easily pull them with MUCH less pressure than that combo would put on them.

              That rule on the rear % for the leafs is bullsh!t. WTF are they afraid of?? Looks like Jeff wrote that rule. Will check to see who is on the Technical Board of Directors.

              The 305 looks to be the ticket power wise. Roller hyd cam, powerglide, vortec heads. I see more than 3200$ spent on this combo.

              The 602 would be a good choice for lower fuel cost, maintenance free racing. The 2 bbl should make that motor last for ever. 100 lb weight break, and with those rear % that should be easy. Focus on the handling. This would be the deal for a newbe or budget racer..

                So is he to assume he should get pretty close to 500 hp? I just cant see the math. Mark , is there any info on the net about that class, engines and such. I like to read. All I can find is chainsaws and such.

                    Low budget move from the 1970s. My mild street motors get screw in studs. Pray someone doesn't read this and do it.

                        I like reading about his alien oil. Or how he runs thin oil but gets around 80 PSI on a 602. My favorite is when he name drops. What about the chassis jig's he has in his shop? This guy is amazing. Why isn't he the lead engineer for Hendricks?

                            I have ran a 305 a couple time in the past in a street stock class. in both cars it worked great we won quite a few races. they're easy to build usable power and now dais they run 305 sprint cars making top notch piston cheeper to buy just add good rods and a steel 350 crank and you can build a 500 hp 305 cu.in motor pretty easy depending on rules.
