Never seen an 8 inch tire car that could use more than a 406ci.A lot of it depends on how good your driver is with throttle control.

The best 18* heads have potential to be about 100cfms better than average 23* stuff. In my way of doing things that is potential for +200HP. Since most folks don't get hold of the best 18* stuff I would say on average 18* stuff is about 100hp better than 23* studff.

Since you are asking about it on here I know you will have never come accross any of the 23* Sprint Car stuff which is pretty bad to the bone but about $2500 set bare, so out of most folks price range.

18* stuff makes more power but for the cost difference you might be better building a good 23* engine if you already have some of the parts. The only differences you would find would be the pistons, heads, intake and headers the rest of the stuff costs the same if you are buying quality parts like shaft rockers and good manifold and headers.

I would recommend you do some research and figure out your budget to get the deal done. If you don't at least have $7500 extra to do the chang-over stick with the 23* heads. I have built some killer 23* stuff with shaft rockers, roller cam, 421" 650HP for less than $10K. It ain't Bryant and Crower billet stuff but it is good quality for $10K. Scat Professional rods and crank, Mahle pistons and rings, CNC Aluminum heads with matched intake and RPM level up to about 7800. Refresh at the end of the year to make sure there are no problems.

Looks like a set of pistons and some headers will get you in the game for less than $5000.

Btw, I know this guy and the the parts are solid..
