    Flat tappet cam for a limited late model

    Im buiding a backup engine. Its a 355 sbc, 58cc heads 205cc, srp flat top, Eagle 6" rods, SCAT crank, super victor intake, quickfuel 750cfm carb. Figured if we blew the main engine this one would keep us on the track untill repairs are made. But my question is given this info what would be the best flat tappet cam for this combo? I would feel comfortable turning this engine up to 7500 rpm

    250-254-106 @.050 ground with 106* lobe seperation.Intake ground on 106* centerline and degreed in on 102* Lift is dependent on rocker ratio.

          You dont mention the lift. Why? What would be too much? Or not enough.

            Flat tappet cams need to stay around. 600 lift but how you get there is dependant on rocker ratio.The less ratio the more aggressive the cam can be.The bigger the lifter diameter the more aggressive the cam can be.Its all about the combination.Anytime you get cam recommendations without being asked about all aspects of the engine its just a wild guess.

              Perfconn: Why do you feel that flat tappets need to stay around .600" lift? I currently am over .700" and it runs very well.

                What diameter lifter do you run? NASCAR runs up around. 800 lift but they use. 875 lifters that have DLC coating and billet steel 60mm cam cores.For the weekend racer using. 842 uncoated lifters and cast iron cam cores. 600 is about all you can run safely.

                  that is false, lots of .600+ lift .842 lifter non coated setups out there and living a long time. talk to a reputable cam grinder to get the correct info.

                    I am running a .875 DLC lifter on a billet core. If I could do it over, I would have used a non DLC on a coated core and 1.9 ratio rockers and lots of duration on. Next time!

                    Believe it or not, it is a two barrel motor at that. Everytime they make more rules to "save us money" we are forced to spend more to keep up.

                      Perfconn: I do agree that when you get past that .600" range, it starts costing more and everything better be just right, or you will have an expensive boat anchor.
