Why would you choose one over the other? Is there any particular difference other than how far it is from the radiator?

no difference really, the short gives you more spacing options. The long, you have less room to space the fan out just right. BUT with the long, you may have a hell of a time finding the correct bottom pulley.

There are more short pumps available. As stated above, more spacing options also. The long pump has more load on the bearings by having the pulley flange farther away from them. The short pumps weigh less. More pully options with the short pumps.
