    Camshaft Suggestions

I would like to know if anyone could recommend a camshaft. I have a ump modified, 355 ci chevy, 12.5 to 1 compression, brodix 10x heads and a team g intake on methanol. I run a 3/8 mile track. Looking for a solid roller. I currently have a old ultradyne cam with the numbers ground off. I measured it around a .638 lift at the valve and around a 302 duration. It seams a little sluggish in this small engine. I have 1.5 rockers and do not want to buy new ones. I don't want to turn the engine over 7800 ever. I would like to be in the 7400 to 7600 range at the end of the straight. I have talked with all the big cam company techs and they are all over the place with grinds, most bigger than I have now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to PM me. Thanks in advance, Kevin

www.jonescams.com Mike Jones can get you a great cam tailored to you engine and track. Bullet has many of UDHarold's designed grinds that are really good, too.

Degree what you have first. If it's like a 112 centerline set in at 116 that would be the reason for the soft mid range.Advancing it to 108 would help alot. The cams that they are recommending could be ground on a 106 with 4 degrees of advance putting them at 102.Building more mid range torque.

Yes engine has been on the dyno. We have played with cam timing but I'm still not happy.

I would look at porting the intake, play with carb spacers, and play with headers to optomize what you have. How much tq/hp did it make on the dyno? What size carb do you have?

Its time for a new cam. This one has been in several engines and is starting to show signs of wear. I don't want to put dyno numbers up due to all the trolls on this sight. They seem to have a field day with stuff like that. I use a 750cfm carb prepped by C&S.

Its always good to upgrade stuff, not trying to talk you out of it. Just trying to understand the whole package you have to help better, because that is what it takes a whole matched package.

I would suggest trying a different carb, maybe someone will loan you one.

Has the intake been ported? You can usually find 20-30hp in different intakes or fully porting one. Something you should check prior to ordering the cam is how much lift your current valve springs can handle unless you plan on possibly getting new springs and valves as well. Have you had the heads flowed to see if the are close to maxing out vs what HP the motor is making?
