You guys might as well get a dose of reality. Jimmie Johnson probably is the best driver to sit in the seat of the top series in NASCAR. He's won 7 championships in the shortest amount of time of the three drivers at that level but most importantly, he did it at the time of the stiffest competition to date. Both Petty and Earnhardt had to only beat a small handful of drivers to win their championships whereas Johnson's weekly competition usually numbered in double digits. He raced the format NASCAR gave him, has never really "points raced" like Earnhardt, has never had THE factory car like Petty, and still outdrove the competition in seven seasons so far. I say so far because he's not finished! I'm a fan of racing, not any particular driver. However, in the case of Johnson, you got to give him credit for reaching the top of the mountain while being a low-keyed individual......pretty humble even.

Hardhead and Petty probably couldn't win in todays format.

(the Gibbs boys).... Argue all you want, but you can't stroke your way into the Chase....
What I gather from the nonsense that you post you are a foremost authority on "strokin'"! LOL!!

There is absolutely no argument about it, when you cut off the season at some point and reset the points and then run one race for the championship the winner does not represent the champion of the full season. It's as simple as that. I like Jimmie and I love the fact that he's in the record books as a 7 time champion. He is a champions' champion and a beacon of virtue on and off the racetrack but a true season's champion is not determined by 1 race or even 10 races. A true season's champion is determined by the whole season.

Oh, and Jimmie actually ran ALL the races and didn't need to have the rules specially modified to allow for him to be eligible to win, unlike the "champion" from 2015. Thus, under the present format Jimmie is a legitimate champion, wouldn't you say?

This chase nonsense is one reason why NASCAR is an afterthought to a lot of former fans, including me. And the number of former fans grows larger every year thanks to the gimmicks nonsense.

Everyone of them that has the trophy is a legitimate winner and champion .... and I think JJ has another one in him...can you say G.O.A.T.? Kyle is young enough, but I don't think he can out Championship JJ, I don't think anyone can... Kyle could get more wins, but that's about it...

Reasonable people will have a valid question as to how someone that didn't participate in 1/3 or the season and had to have the rules waived to be mysteriously eligible and included to compete for a championship can possibly be considered a legitimate champion. NASCAR lost a huge amount of credibility in their quest to become a major nationwide entertainment entity with that ill-fated move. Although, I think that train had left the station when the gimmicks became the pervasive theme of Cup racing.

With the parity in NASCAR it will be hard to repeat also just like certain tracks it's very hard to compare certain lengths of time with others , but NASCAR gimmicks are still ajoke
