Chase Elliott will pilot the #9 next year for HMS.
Jimmie Johnson #48
Chase Elliott #9
William Byron #24
Alex Bowman #88
I always thought it was high ego that kept them from letting Chase run the #9. Very stout group of young men absolutely. Wonder how many more seasons JJ will keep playing the game? Lotta guys his age have been bowing out recently long before they lose the skills. Few more years and the whole field will be nothing but baby face young guns looking forward to shaving.

JJ will retire after he gets #8. Could be THIS year!
There's sooo much adjustment. What's fast for one guy may not work for another.
The 48 has a smart car that responds well to panhard adjustment. They have a lot of knowledge about their setup and know what changes to make and how the track is going to change.
Unless things have changed, you don't just randomly pick a number. I suspect someone owned the number in NASCAR and Hendrick had to make some kind of deal to get usage of that #9. Anyway, that's the way it used to be.

You right, Petty owned it and offered it to Hendrick, both Bill and Chase wanted the #9 from the start. However Rick and Jeff thought the #24 was more prominent and that fans would still associate the car with Jeff if the #24 remained... The only reason Chase is getting it now is because of the shake up in the roster. Best of Luck to Chase and the other young guns, but I don't care for Hendrick Corporate style racing, no thanks.

Yea ... Junk equipment ..... Thats been jr's whole problem all this time .....
I really hope the best for those two youngsters and I realize that Jr. has to have some fault in the performance. I am simply saying the 5 and 88 have not been very good to say the least. OTH Elliot has been fast, but those other two teams are going to have to step it up. The equipment is obviously not junk. LOL
