Hmmmm, you certainly didn't congratulate last years champion, Power boy. When did the championship go to an undeserving winner? I can only think of one but that was all the way back in 1990. Could it be that you just don't harbor any pent up hatred for Truex?

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Jimmie Johnson already was the greatest driver in NASCAR history before Sunday night, when he won his record-tying seventh Sprint Cup series championship.

Five titles in a row during NASCAR’s most competitive era, plus another three years later, was enough to determine that.

But now that Johnson has No. 7, tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr., there’s no disputing he’ll be a permanent fixture on NASCAR’s Mount Rushmore, no matter what drivers come along in future generations.

Johnson, 41 and the youngest to get to seven, might not be done. Paired with Chad Knaus — who is one shy of the championship record of eight titles for a crew chief, a mark held by Dale Inman — there could be more titles to come. How high can Johnson set the bar? Maybe he can stand alone at the top with No. 8. He’ll certainly have a good shot in 2017.


“I mean, let’s go,” Johnson said. “I’m so excited to put that in front of myself (and) the team as a hurdle to get over and achieve. This one only gives me only more confidence for the future. … I think it makes us really dangerous, and I look forward to the challenge of getting No. 8.”

But whether this is the last one or not, it will be remembered.

Critics tried to dismiss Johnson’s five in a row from 2006 to 2010 as an incredible hot streak, a product of a Chase format that valued late-season excellence over season-long consistency. Sunday, though, put a huge dent in that argument.

Gotten over pee wee jr.? Sure.

I was pulling for him all the way in '15. It was great and altogether proper that NASCAR altered the rules to accommodate a guy to the extent that he is able to win a championship of the premier NASCAR division competing in just 2/3rds of the season.

BTW last years winner was a joke.

Power boy, ol' buddy, the joke is your undying hatred and denigration towards one of the sports' greatest drivers (probably the best of all time) who is also a solid human being with class, manners and humility and the cowardly way you run away from clearly and truthfully stating why. dobber, there is virtually no argument for the point that you make. I've been a very loyal King fan since I was 9 years old, and still am. However, there are those who would dismiss some of what The King accomplished in a stock car as irrelevant due to lack of competition during his NASCAR heyday and Petty Enterprises being hard wired into the factory connections. There may be some validity to that theory. Arnhead is another story. He was not only hard wired into the factory connections, he was also hard wired into the NASCAR hierarchy, AKA Billy France Jr. To fair minded people this discounts some of what arnhead accomplished due to thinly veiled NASCAR bias, just as the case has been made over the years in regards to The King and his perceived advantages. That leaves Jimmie. I'm not a rabid JJ fan, by no means. However, his quality of character, what he has accomplished and the numbers he's hung up are impossible to discount.

It's been said by self proclaimed NASCAR experts (and you know who you are, LOL!) that Jimmie is just merely lucky, had the best equipment and the best and brightest crew chief. That's pretty much hatred coming out because the numbers and stats are way too gaudy to discount in such a way! Now, if you want to completely disregard the numbers and stats then David Pearson is the guy who most deserves being referred to as The G.O.A.T. and I would concur with that point of view. But on the other hand, the numbers don't lie.

By bland do you mean some of the California racers, Jimmie being the most famous example, show manners, class, dignity, humility and have had an adequate upbringing. Bland would apply to someone like JJ if your preference is guys that go out of their way to be a$$holes for no good reason. I've never gravitated towards those kinds of guys. If "character" is going out their way to be a mannerless jerk then give me bland all day long, no matter how great of a driver they may be.
