The hits just keep on coming for NASCAR. The wheels are continuing to come off. These developments related to low attendance numbers and sagging TV ratings are a very bad omen.

Although this news shouldn't surprise anyone it certainly should sadden those of us who consider ourselves race fans of all disciplines of racing. Whether one enjoys or scorns NASCAR it's still racing at a high level and is/was a large part of the sport we love.

What once was a mighty and proud sports entity is reduced to a laughing stock and an afterthought. Stick & ball sports writers and reporters who have hated NASCAR from the jump must be revelling in it's inevitable demise. The King, who has been around from the very beginning, watched the steady ascent from a backwoods, regional redneck pastime to one of the most popular spectator sports in the country and who has accumulated vast amounts of fame, fortune, universal respect and admiration, must be wondering what the hell went wrong.

The original deal, which began in the 2015 season, was a big change from how driver and team merchandise had typically been sold at tracks, which was usually out of team haulers outside the track.

Instead, Fanatics debuted a one-stop-shopping large tent structure from which to sell all of the merchandise, but that ran into resistance from fans who preferred the original model.

Translation: A middle man wanted to come in and steal profit from the teams and/or shake down the fans with higher prices. Teams and fans didn't fall for it and their scheme failed. This sounds more like a positive than a negative. So, goodbye and good riddance.

Nascar may not be doing as well as it once was, but it isn't exactly headed to the poor house just yet either. As Mark Twain once said, "the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated."

I don't pretend to spend the time required to study and understand the business model that was in place regarding the FANATICS deal and it will take more than a racing forum post to convince me that you fully understand it so forgive me if I take what you say with a very small grain of salt.

While complete demise is not imminent and if you objectively comprehend what I said it will become clear that I never made that claim. What I did say is that NASCAR is a mere shadow of what it once was and the decline is significant and steady from year to year and if the declines in total revenue creation and lack of sponsorship participation, among other things, continue, the demise of NASCAR in it's present form and format is, in fact, inevitable. Being the laughing stock of the sports world doesn't help, either. I cannot predict the future but there are indication's that point to NASCAR being, at some point, reduced to an overall entity that resembles the Indy Car model of today. Which is to say that it won't go completely away but it will become an afterthought with little to no relevance, Indy 500 notwithstanding. To me that is demise compared to what NASCAR once was.

Rumors of demise? Not yet. Factual decline in relevance and overall interest and the continuation of that decline? Absolutely, beyond doubt. What impact this FANATICS deal has on the overall NASCAR business model? Not smart enough to say but the one thing cannot be denied is that the optics are not good regardless of your claim that it is a great thing!
