NASCAR Changes Wheel Rules For 2021

Looks like NASCAR is going to emulate Indy Car to a small extent with one big center nut wheel system.

Now, if they'd go to the on-board air actuated jacking system like Indy Car and a safer and faster fueling system like Indy Car they'd eliminate a significant degree of hazard to crew members associated with pit stops. Why not eliminate the old style flour jacks and the fuel cans? After all, this is 2020 and the days of NASCAR race cars being remotely associated with anything that comes off the manufacturer's assembly lines is virtually nonexistent anyway so going for optimum safety for crew members would seem to make good sense.

These cars will start to look more and more like the Aussie Supercars. I always thought Brian France had more sports car sensibilities than anyone else in the NASCAR management. I would think they want to migrate to more right/left action along with more tech changes to try and bring a more international flavor because let's face it, they killed the old ways off a while ago.

Once they get significant changes in the engine compartment (hybrids), you'll probably see Honda, VW, MB, BMW, and maybe a couple others look at getting on board. But this F1 with fenders aspect will only balloon the costs more and shrink the fields further. Then what do you do with the lower tier series like Xfinity, Trucks, and Touring (KN Series)? Do you try and make them follow suit? Good luck with that. There ain't enough money to make that work.
Political correctness,...is the inability to speak the truth about the obvious.

You make some sensible and pertinent points and express them in an educated manner. Since I don't spend much time following the backstory's and nuances of NASCAR anymore I'm not all that learned in what direction NASCAR is looking to go so most anything I say is based on a 15 to 20 year old point of reference.

I will say this with all confidence, a large percentage of everyone I know that is still interested and enamored with NASCAR, both young and old, will lose some interest if there is exponentially more emphasis placed on road and street course racing. I'm not sure how all the foreign based manufacturer's will go over with the fandom but my guess is not all that well.

Our spur of the moment attendance of this years Daytona 500 after a 20+ year absence certainly surprised us considering the demographic shift from the last time there. The sophistication of the crowd was a departure from our last visit, as well. The 500 was a Sunday sellout and I can see why after experiencing the $400 million face lift of a few years ago!. The place is NICE.

Something that hasn't changed is a huge portion of the crowd sets down during yellow flag segments but stands when the cars are coming to the green and remain standing! That's one of the reason's we stopped attending NASCAR races. Damdest thing I ever seen!

THE sudden increase in attendance BALOONED when it was known that the most productive and also race friendly President in recent history was going to be there IMO.

yep , might as well just go to a full style indy car and survive off TV ratings alone , this will more than likely finish off the last single car team in existence , the wood brothers , I was hoping they would get that 100th win though......

I believe the Daytona 500 was sold out prior to a public announcement that the President was going to be in attendance.

What, prey tell, is a "full style" Indy Car? My business acumen doesn't extend to levels that could be used to determine the fate of an entity the size of NASCAR but I'm pretty sure it would be a bit risky to base a profit driven business model on an American based second Indy Car style series. Especially now since Roger Penske, one of the most, if not THE most, successful businessmen in the history of auto racing would be the primary competitor.

Nope, I already said I don't have the answers and I made no implications that I did. You're the one who's making the claims, unsolicited on my behalf, that I can help to fix NASCAR's problems, not me. Did ya' miss that part? It seems so.

I have no intentions of making any boasts about Daytona's/NASCAR's ability to draw a sellout crowd but the fact of the matter is they sold all the tickets available, and that, by definition, is a sellout. I'm guessing they removed 50,000 or 60,000 thousand seats that were once located on the backstretch but that's just a guess. I think as little of what NASCAR has become as anyone else. We were merely stating facts.

I'm nothing but an Illini clod hopper and I studied clod hoppin' (and a little "wild life") at a little BIG10 school located in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois thus I am not all that much of a scholar, either. But again, you made the claim that I might be educated enough to help NASCAR, not me. However, if "acumen" is a foreign word to you and you don't know how to google up the meaning at least a partial refund on whatever your secondary education cost might be justified! LOL!

I'm still quite interested in what exactly a "full styled Indy Car" is. Please expand. Thanks.

thats hillbilly for go kart , and even though i went to a back woods school , i feel i posses the ability to make good judgement s and quick decisions , typically in a particular domain , down here we just simply call it common sense , your the one that stated it was a drunk hill billy that was throwing cans at gordon , with out knowing for sure , seems you may be lacking in that acumen to me . my secondary education may not have cost much , but i paid for every bit of it myself , did you?

Wellllll…….I thought since Brian got kicked to the curb maybe Jim would fix the "problems". I thought I was beginning to see some improvement until this latest "nascar killer"!

Just one question......Does Bill France Jr have ANY kids or distant relatives with ANY common sense? SMH

My dad would be rolling over in his grave if he was to see what they have done to his beloved Nascar!Theres a huge reason why I was born in Daytona at the famous Halifax Hospital!

zero , it was already to far gone for jim to fix it , now i will say i thought the stage thing would help , at least it kept me awake for the whole race , which i realize a lot of the old timers dont like it , but nascar will never be RACING like back then , and even with stage racing , it all depends on who wants to be second the majority of the time...

Whew!! You cover a lotta' ground is a short space. Sorry so long but it's impossible to cover everything effectively without being a bit lengthy.

Okay Mr. Hilljack, I sense a mild attempt at condescension with the use of the metaphor "kart" (don't you southern boys call 'em "skeeter car's", too?! LOL!!) for an Indy Car but the meaning of "full style" is yet to be clarified, as well. The common Indy Car, in it's present iteration, seems to be fully styled. I'm still curious as to what your literal definition of a NASCAR version of a "full style" Indy Car would consist of.

In regards to the drunken hillbilly moniker we can split hairs with literal definitions but, as I eluded to earlier, anyone who chucks a full beer can in reaction to something as meaningless as the outcome of an auto race is vastly deficient in IQ. Would those same drunken hillbilly's chuck a full beer can if it was a certainty they would be identified, prosecuted and banned without the benefit of the anonymity and protection of being in a crowd provides? Prolly not. Besides, there were hundreds of full cans chucked by hundreds of hillbilly's, not just one. But who's counting! LOL!

Being a hillbilly is, and should be, a source of pride. In addition, there is no particular ignominy in being a drunken hillbilly. Where the disparage comes into play is when someone who fancies themselves as a race fan is ignorant and does dangerously stupid things, as was the case with those who threw full beer cans at a race car and onto the race track.

I'm really glad you made an issue of who paid for my undergraduate-secondary schooling!! I paid for every penny of tuition, room & board, activity fee's and books. I graduated with just a couple of thousand in student loans and they have been long since paid off by ME! The shortfall was covered by a modest academic scholarship and working a part time job, sometimes two jobs. That fact is a huge source of pride nearly as big as the sheepskin itself. Find another tree 'cause that one is the wrong one to be barkin' up.

                              I'm with you STRONGER.

It's becoming apparent that NASCAR could be moving towards a series that would be akin to Formula 1 with fenders. Some of the scuttle has road racing becoming more a part of the Cup schedule with hybrids and more foreign based manufacturers coming into the series. I'm not sure how that will make NASCAR as relevant as it once was because we all know what happened to Indy Car when they heavily weighted their schedule with road and street courses. My fear is that the dirt/short track guys will be replaced with drivers that have a road racing background. Where do the best road racing drivers traditionally come from? Take a guess.

I personally don't want to see NASCAR go the way of Indy Car. But, if there is more money to be made by going that direction then I reckon it'll happen regardless of what I think or want.
