We and a few of my neighbors had Arctic Cat snowmobiles back in the day. A 1971 and 3 1972s with the Sachs Wankel rotory engine. They were torquey engines and were as good at climbing steep hills as anything. The 71s had a Tilittson carb and the newer ones had the Walbro carb. They had more performance and started easier when hot.

Sounds like an efficient engine. Wankel developed an interesting piece. I’m surprised we do not see more use of this engine in vehicles.

They just kept revving and revving. The Mazda vehicles with the twin rotor was quite the performer. The big thing that got them trouble was they couldnt meet EPA standards for polution.

And for some reason the newer RX8 will flood very easily on initial cold start up and need to be towed to a warm environment , have the plugs replaced and cylinders purged of fuel !

The Wankel, loves to 2 things RPM and they love BOOST, and those 2 things cut one of the things that it was designed for, which is efficiency.

Absolutely 100% agree about Mazdas. If only the spare parts were a bit more available in the US, I'd bought Mazda CX-9 Touring without a second thought. The car is a killer in absolutely every possible sense. Even the used one will beat more expensive new counterparts. Just take a look at the beauties on Mazda for sale

Guy named Neil Beissert (sp) in California's central valley built an open comp mini stock with a rear mounted RX 7 engine on a tube frame with a glass Fiat Topolino body like the '60s altered drag cars. This was in the late '80s-early '90s and Neil absolutely killed the competition with it.
Mazda used to advertise the rotary as the engine that went hummm. They never heard the little car scream with no mufflers..it was painful, but jawdropping to watch.

We also had an Arctic Cat 760 JLO Panther with the big 760 JLO engine in itt. It had the twin chrome Montana side exhaust pipes. I had dreams of installing a Y pipethen side pipes on the 1971 Panther with the 303 Sachs Wankel in it. I think that the sound would have been amazing. Those engines were torque monsters !
