Its been known for awhile and has actually been reported on recently that the production of these cars still hurt the environment. From what I've seen, the most concerning issue is the resources needed to produce the batteries used in most of these cars. As for the source of their electricity, that is an issue with the power grid that needs to be changed. If the US gets off its ass and puts more emphasis on nuclear energy, the problems with pollution from power plants goes down a ton.

When a volcano erupts, the environment is severely hurt for a (comparatively) short time. The scientific consensus around global warming has shown that human activities have been gradually raising the temperatures of the earth for decades without the environment returning to its a original state like with volcanic eruptions. The fact you say the sun negates any of this shows me how little you know about this topic.
