A CBS Reports investigation has discovered that American citizens are aiding Mexican drug cartels by purchasing military-grade weapons before having them smuggled out of the US, which has allowed the cartels to amass a “vast arsenal†of firearms.
CBS Reports was able to speak to several current and former government officials, in addition to obtaining U.S. intelligence documents, which revealed the scope of the problem and the government’s lack of action on the issue. The information CBS Reports obtained indicates that up to a million firearms, worth over half a billion dollars, are being smuggled into Mexico every year, including high-powered weapons like grenade launchers.
Though the U.S. government has been attempting to fight against drug traffickers from the southern border for over 50 years, it has largely been a losing battle. Thanks to the help of American citizens, hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of firearms have made it into the hands of the cartels that are now trafficking deadly substances like fentanyl into America. With so much firepower, the cartels have been able to fight back against both the Mexican and American governments, making all attempts to stop the cartels from smuggling illegal drugs fruitless.
