I have met some real characters in my life time. I will start with a man Paul Wells many may remember the 555 in the 70's. A mentor he coached baseball & isaw him tie a string to people's legs to stop them from stepping out of the batters box. Paul put me at the bottom of the line & said he did so cause I could hit, he then handed me a white aluminum bat & told me to have at it! Later he got a kart, I recently told a coworker who seemed intent on making me choose between black & white fellowship, about Paul's black Panther X kart & how Paul grew up on a farm recognized as the first stop of the underground railroad in the southeast Ohio area. When I started work in Parkersburg, WV I fell in with Jeff Burdette & started crewing-that led to a man by the name of Gary Lucas selling me a kart at which I struck out on my own. Aquick note, in a village of about 50 people the only names I recall are-Lucas,Cook,Keys,McAtee,Wells,Lynch,Hafer,Mayle & Croston! I was tall for karts but done well at times using minimal stagger, a higher center of gravity-more weight transer,so to better utilize the right rear during cornering & less spending/spinning. A big Charlie Swartz fan(does any one remember the fight at Skyline?) I always stayed in touch with Jeff & Mike Burdette & I originally started making bumpers for Last Lap Performance which Mike Richardson now enjoys. One more thought on a cool summer evening Shane Hafer offered his Impala to me at Skyline, I originally said no thanks but after he walked away thought Y-the hell not-The first lap was a show, the left rear not hooking up I over compensated a couple of times only to regain control. Lap 2
I recall backing off the throttle hard to see if the k car had any left rear(should have known from lap 1) it did not set so lap 3- GIVE HELL & WISH HER WELL!- Always a showman(CHARLIE"S BOOK)I thought it best to lighten up & SHAVE the door handles if possible! Back toward the front with a late caution I ended up 2nd. I got S1ample. I feel as though NoOne ever treated me the same, maybe I was suppose to fail maybe they think I am a snitch- an incident from my early years I shared with Georgie at Bloomquist Racing. If you have nobody then & no tools then learn to do it the write way! It is hard to imagine something you have never seen. I hope this disspells any rumors. About karts-learn the fun damentals the men you will associate with as you grow/point her in the correct direction/ set that _itch down & make she doesn't stray!
