I've been seeing more and more people engaging in dialog about their feelings of impending doom and acting on these fears by laying in provisions to attempt to survive.

I'm a little too young to have had first hand feelings on the cold war but besides that I've always felt these folks were a bit reactionary. Not necessarily loony, but just a bit obsessed with the slight prospect of having to survive long periods of time amid total social chaos.

Lately though, while assessing the clear and present danger of an economic collapse in my lifetime, I find myself more and cognisant of the undeniable indicators of the possibility of just that.

It appears, given the numbers of the last election, that about 25% of the electorate doesn't understand what is happening and another 26% to 27% don't care as long as their guys are elected. This goes for both sides but it seems far more prevalent during this past campaign than it has in the past.

I'm just feeling a slight inkling that maybe we should be a bit more open to the possibility of an impending economic collapse and social chaos. Are there any solid pointers that would indicate just the opposite?

Not just the possibility of economic collapse. It never hurts to be prepared for a once in a century storm, earthquake or any natural (or man made) catastrophe. I will not rely on government help that may or may not becoming or may be days or weeks away. It's just common sense planning.

Quoted for truth. Although many would insist prepping is for crazy conspiracy folks, there is nothing wrong with being prepared for whatever is thrown your way. Tornadoes are very common in my area and just look at Joplin to see what kind of destruction is possible. If I were to survive a hit like that I would like to be as prepared as possible to get back on my feet. That doesn't include waiting on the Gov to cut me a check or make me a sandwich. Save that for the elderly or handicapped that cannot do for themselves. I am able bodied and would be best suited to help others if I am in good health and mentally in check. Worrying about IF my family is prepared would make both more difficult.

My best advice is get prepared in case of a situation. Don't just have the tools but know how to use them. I spend a lot of time in the outdoors honing skills, but doing so in a fun relaxing way. If the time comes I should be in good shape.

You may be correct, it may not be a total collapse. The problem is, those who lived within their means and saved all their lives will take a horrible hit financially at a time in their lives when they can least afford a devaluation of their life savings.

Depending on how long we last before the country defaults and goes bankrupt, that could include me and my wife. I'm still a ways from retirement age but if these irresponsible imbeciles string out the inevitable long enough it just might catch us at a very bad time.

It gets a little more scary every day, especially when our president gives a state of the union speech and never once mentions the national debt and what he plans to do to decrease it. WTF!!
