Another Historic Dirt Track Might Be Headed for Extinction

Another historically significant track that hosts a huge yearly event (Super Dirt Week) may be headed for the wrecking ball at the hands of what appears to be a heavily left leaning pie in the sky idealist. I have a feeling that New Yorkers will not rise up to stop this travesty. There are not enough people in the whole state of New York who have been living in the United States long enough to have any emotional connection to one of only 4 one mile dirt race tracks still used for auto racing. I know, I've spent a fair amount of time in The Empire State.

The Moody Mile is seeing it's last days and there isn't a thing anyone can do about it. If this happens I really hope the New York State Fair fades away right along with the Moody Mile!!

This is really disturbing and sad news. Another traditional landmark just being brushed away by the Progressive liberal socialists that run New York.

Clayton, I am inclined to agree. The woman that appears to be at the forefront of this travesty seems to be a uber-conservationist (I HATE the word green in this connotation). Some of her ilk would say change is inevitable and good. In some cases change is a good thing, it just isn't good in this instance.

The scary part is something like this could easily happen in Illinois. There has already been talk about possibly doing away with the Du Quoin State Fair and even some grumblings about the Illinois State Fair in Springfield being too much of a monetary burden to continue. If the State Fairs are done away with or even privatized it could easily be the beginning of the end for 2 of the 3 one mile dirt tracks in all of America.

There is no indication that any movement to do away with the Indiana State Fairgrounds Mile exists. I honestly believe the people of Indiana are smarter than that. Illinois is another story, especially when you have the urban cesspool of chitcago running things for the whole state.

What is happening in New York is one more solid indication that we as race fans need to support the tracks we have, especially tracks that are hallowed ground like Syracuse, Springfield, Du Quoin and The Indy Mile.

This link is to the response of the CEO of the WRG. The WRG is the promoter of Super Dirt Week. There really isn't all that much in the response to be optimistic about.

Having raced once on the Springfield mile.There is NOTHING that can compare to racing a mile track.It is the closest thing to a super speedway for the dirt trackers.Sorry to hear about Syracuse. WRG (UMP) is powerless to help since they only promote (sanction) the race.

The superspeedway analogy is a good one.

I read an article dealing with the Illinois Fall Nationals at The Springfield Mile. The article dealt with the incredible late race battle among dirt late model drivers Jack Hewitt, Kenny Schrader and John Mason. The author of that article correctly coined the 1 mile ovals as the superspeedway's of dirt tracks.
