Wood Brothers #21 Car Not Granted An Ownership Charter

Hmmmm. How ironic is it that the rules can be bent, reshaped and disregarded in some cases but in the case of a team that has been continually in existence for 66 years and has been as loyal to NASCAR as any team ever has doesn't get a break in the rules.

It appears giving pee wee jr. a pass on missing 1/3 of a season by waiving the rules and allowing him to become one of very few illegitimate Cup champions is pretty important. Obviously much more important than granting a team a franchise criteria waiver that by all accounts has been a pillar of virtue within the garage area and NASCAR community for 66 years.

Some folks wonder why NASCAR has become a punch line after being one of the most prestigious racing sanctions in the world a short decade ago. Well folks, these kinds of bull$hit decisions is a big part of why.

Team states: "We have endured challenges throughout our 66 years and will undoubtedly face more in the future, but that's what makes our team unique.''

Kid, I'm in a bad mood. I'm working on taxes so maybe I shouldn't be posting. LOL!

But, I'm with ya', the "rules are rules" BS will never again be a viable response by NASCAR. It never really was if we knew all the truth going back to the very beginnings.

Just one more gimmick to pacify the money people of the sport. I don't like it, either.

Sad news indeed, drano. Lennie Pond was the 1973 NASCAR Winston Cup ROY (actually beat out Darrell Waltrip for that honor) and set a world speed record for a 500 mile race at Talladega back in the mid to late 1970's.

              RIP Mr. Pond.

I agree with ya, I don't like the guarantee either, BUT this is a good deal for the smaller teams, they have some worth now and what the top 28 or 34 in points were guaranteed a start anyway so no real change.. Not sure cutting out three starters is a good idea or not, but the cost of racing dictates that issue...

Does anyone see the irony? Mud bitches about what he perceives as bitchin.

If they're gonna' be wishy-washy then be wishy-washy all the time. If the Wood Brothers aren't worthy of charter ownership status then there is no one in the garage area that is worthy. No one!

Now let's see if we've got this straight, Michael Waltrip Racing is no longer going to field cars because most of their primary sponsors abandoned them due to being caught blatantly cheating and illicitly gaming the system on multiple occasions and they have 2, count 'em, 2 franchises that they can sell. But the Wood Brothers, one of, if not, THE most respected teams in NASCAR history isn't allowed a franchise. Gee, a driver misses 1/3 of the season and is rewarded with a championship (illegitimate but who really cares, right?) but the Wood Brothers don't get a waiver to become charter owners because they haven't run a full schedule for the past 3 seasons? What the he!! is that?!

That's almost as ironic as mud bitchin' about what he thinks is bitchin'! LOL!

I'm also curious as to how this is going to benefit a fledgling team attempting to work their way to charter ownership status if there are no franchises for sale.

Exactly, and what NASCAR has done here is to add value to the little guy...how could that be bad?

Wood Brothers cut themselves out, talk to them about their folly.... Fledgling teams will work their way in through just that, hard work, if you recall, NASCAR said this is a performance business, if your not living up to your potential, then you could lose your charter... which is good thinking so some of the little teams don't just start stroking cause they are guaranteed a spot... reasonable well thought out I think... I'm sure there will be revisions and adjustments, but for the basic deal it looks good on paper and won't impact racing at all...

I agree, if anyone deserved special consideration it was the Wood brothers. To me the charter deal is an insult to racers everywhere, racing is predicated on performance and speed, NOT club membership. Once Tony hangs up his Cup helmet for good I have no intentions of ever watching or attending another Nascrap event. I kinda hope he just calls it a career from the hospital and starts focusing on his dirt stuff that much sooner. JMO

I seen Dale Jr interviewed yesterday, and was interesting part about all of this charter deal. Great for owners, but said he was reworking his contract with Hendricks. Also stated purse money for races had changed, and that racers income was different. Interesting we have not heard to much about other affects of this charter deal.
As for Wood brothers, its a shame. Nascar makes exceptions for everything, but Wood brothers, sorry. It could be possible bad blood between Woods and France family????
