Indianapolis 500

The Indy 500 doesn't carry the weight in the racing world that it once did, that is indisputable. But it still is the biggest and most prestigious race in North America, if not the world.

Winning it will still make a career and is a life changing victory, even in it's somewhat diminished standing. Winning the Indianapolis 500 will not necessarily ensure a championship, or even a successful season long campaign, but winning it will most certainly heal a lot of financial wounds for the winning driver and car owner.

J.P. Montoya won $2,449,055.00 by being victorious in the 2015 Indy 500 for himself and his car owner. Joey Logano won $1,581,453.00 in winning the Daytona 500, arguably the 2nd biggest race in North America. If I'm doing the math correctly that's an $867,602.00 difference in the winners share, or around 63% less. Well over 3/4 of a million difference, and that ain't hay in my world!

The last 3 Indy 500's have been fabulously exciting races. And pretty much all 500 miles, too. Not much riding around.

The 2013 Indy 500 had 68 lead changes among 15 different drivers. 5 lead changes occurred in the last 30 laps (75 miles).

2014 saw 35 lead changes involving 11 different drivers. 6 lead changes in the final 20 laps (50 miles).

2015 there were 10 different leaders and 20 cars on the lead lap at the end.

What's especially gratifying is that the gimmicks are kept to a minimum. No lucky dog, no wave around's, no overtime or green-white-checkers and no bump and run BS, either.

They all can't be as great as the last 3 500's but hopefully the 275,000+ in the stands will see another very good, gimmick free race this year. I'd say it's a safe bet that the TV audience for the Indy 500 will be much larger than for the NASCAR race again this year.

kinda like the chilli bowl there has been 57 deaths at Indy compared to 24 at Daytona that's including 2 races at Daytona

Won't be any empty seats thus no need for grandstands that are painted to resemble people setting in them at Indy! Unlike NASCAR tracks!

That is unless we're talking about the Brickyard 400. Hahahaha!

All 270,000+ seats are sold for the Indy 500! Will NASCAR sanction a race, any race, that will draw that size crowd this year, or last year, or the year before, or next year, or the year after that? Hang your hat on THAT muddy ol' buddy!! LOLOL!

And they still have one race a year to hang their hat on....yawn..... and they have to use NASCAR rejects to get any billing....

There's no doubt this race does not always live up to the hype but, sometimes it does and the last few years it's been a pretty darn good race. That's what it's going to take for NASCAR for the racing to be better and NASCAR is trying it just sometimes they don't always make the right choices. It seems like their on the right track because the racing has been better this year not great but, better.
