Dirt Track Standout Bryan Clauson At Indy

One of the best dirt track drivers in the country over the past 6 or 7 years was 10th fastest in the first practice session at The Brickyard in preparation for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29th.

Bryan was 10th fastest overall in today's practice session with his fastest lap at 224.767 MPH!!

If Bryan puts his Dale Coyne Racing entry in the show it will be his 3rd start in the Indy 500.

Bryan has 13 A-main wins already this season at Tulsa, OK, 2 at Peoria, AZ, Ocala, FL, Perris, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Brownstown, IN, Bloomington, IN, Knoxville, IA, Jacksonville, IL, Eldora Speedway and Plymouth, IN. Clauson has gotten those 13 wins driving a midget, a 360 wingless sprint car, a 410 wingless sprint car and a 360 winged sprint car.

Unfortunately Larson is prohibited from racing too much dirt these days for obvious reasons but he's the only one who can rival Clauson for racing diversity and success in the process!

Kid, ya' got it right about someone to root for! There will be more attention paid to Clauson's day to day activities at IMS than probably any other driver. He brings with him the attention of a very large contingent of dirt racing fans from across the country.

Clauson is originally from California but has lived and raced primarily out of Indiana for several years, now. Dale Coyne and Jonathan Byrd Racing own the Indy Car Clauson will attempt to qualify for the Indy 500 and those folks are grass roots owners who have toiled in the Indy Car ranks for virtually decades. Coyne is based in our neck of the woods and has been a mainstay in Indy Car racing what seems like forever. All those good people deserve all the publicity they can get along with good luck and a good finish in the 500!

We hung out with Bryan and his Dad at Belleville, Kansas last August when we were out there for the Belleville Midget Nationals. Very, very gracious and down to earth folks, for sure.

Bryan is dabbling in race promotion, as well. He and his girlfriend promoted the indoor USAC National Midget show at Du Quoin in March.

Last year he raced at Indy in the afternoon and then I seen him at Kokomo that night. He had a bus load of fans that also came to Kokomo to cheer him on.

I believe that Bryan and his girlfriend were the organizers of the bus deal last year. I think they're going to do the same deal this year with Clauson and company organizing it again this year. I want to say they call it the Indy Double, or something like that. It sounds like a good deal and we'd consider doing it but we hang at The Speedway for a while after the 500 is finished and probably wouldn't want to leave soon enough to catch the bus.

dmr, is the Kokomo deal worth attending and busting our asses to get out of Indy after the 500 is over? Can you recall the car count at Kokomo and were most of the recognizable names from USAC there last year? We've contemplated for several years making the effort to go up there from Indy after the 500 is over. We're thinking about making the trip up there this year but not sure if we can make it in time after the 500 traffic clears. Also, if we arrive at Kokomo a bit later than usual will we be able to get a good seat?

Thanks for any info you can pass along since we've never done the Kokomo deal after the 500 and we're thinking the whole 500 atmosphere might change circumstances from what we know to be normal at Kokomo.

I remember they had a full field + (about 25-30 cars). Darland, Coons, Cottle, Andretti were some that were there. The Clauson bus had a tent set up in the lot and they were BBQing and having a good time. It was pretty crowded in the stands and I ended up sitting close to the fence and those big sprint car tires threw up some seriously big mud clods.

We'll have to see what time we get away from The Speedway following the completion of the Indy 500 and determine at that time if it's feasible to try to make it up to Kokomo.

We might just be raced out by then. We're leaving home with the camper on Wednesday the 25th of May headed to Terre Haute for the Hulman Classic USAC National Sprint Car race there. We'll spend the night at the track in Terre Haute and head for Indy Thursday morning. We'll get set up in our camp site Thursday afternoon and around 5 pm we'll head for The Indiana State Fairgrounds where the USAC Silver Crown cars will be running the 100 lap Hoosier Hundred on the 1 mile dirt track Thursday evening. We'll go out Clermont, IN just West of Speedway to ORP (formerly known as Indianapolis Raceway Park) for the USAC Silver Crown cars on the asphalt Friday night and Saturday night we'll head North from Indy to watch 33 410 sprint cars compete in the 500 lap Little 500 on the 1/4 mile asphalt up at Anderson Speedway. Then of course the big one, the Indy 500 is Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.

We, my wife especially, might be raced out come Sunday night after the 500, but we'll see. We might have one more left in us at that point, ya' never know!!

We were highly pleased to learn that Byrd Racing and Coyne merged. Indy car needs more of the grass roots teams. Not every team can be of a caliber of Penski, Ganassi or Andretti.

We were extremely saddened by the news that Sarah Fisher had to cease operations earlier this year due to her partner and oil man, Wink Hartman being decimated financially by low crude prices.

Bryan Clauson drove for Sarah Fisher in his first Indy 500. We were in the garage area on the Saturday prior to the 500 and there were more people congregated around Clauson, Josef Newgarden and Sarah than any other garage.

Got to talk at length with Sarah at this years Chili Bowl. What a nice lady, and not too bad of a driver, too.

I talked to Sarah at The Chili Bowl last January. What a beautiful and gracious lady. It was an honor to engage in a conversation with her. I watched her drive full midgets and WoO winged sprint cars and she would mix it up with Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell without hesitation.

Sarah and her husband built a huge indoor go kart track in Speedway, IN and that is occupying much of her and her family's time. I sincerely hope she somehow is able to be involved in Indy Car ownership again in the future. In my opinion Sarah was the best female driver ever to compete in a major sanctioning body and is good for whatever racing sanction she's involve in!

Bryan Clauson is currently 16th fastest with a 4 lap average of 225.226 MPH. If nothing changes that should be good for the inside of 6th row!! WOO HOO!! WAY TO GO BRYAN, YOU MAKE US DIRT TRACK FANS PROUD!!
