Applying constructability principles in early design

On a recent design‑build project, the engineering team pushed forward with layouts that seemed elegant on paper but difficult to build in practice. We considered whether to pause for a review but worried about delays. Has anyone found constructability assessments at this stage truly valuable or just a formality?

In our hospital project, a formal Constructability Review conducted before procurement saved significant time and cost later. It identified issues such as limited crane access, unrealistic sequencing of structural elements, and safety concerns around temporary works. Adjustments made early prevented expensive redesigns during construction. The upfront investment of time paid back quickly by avoiding disputes and accelerating approvals. It showed the practical value of testing buildability before committing to final design documents.
