Maybe the organizers have paid the venue to not have to use it, but I doubt it. SEMA and all shows in Vegas use Union Labor, as does the Florida Convention Center in Orlando as well. My guess is PRI and IMIS used it, but you don't realize it.

They usually are the ones that unload every truck and deliver your items to your booth (and then you are allowed to set it up yourself once it's to your booth). When it comes to banners my guess is they are the only ones allowed to use the manlifts and such needed to place the banners (these convention halls are under OSHA scrutiny, they can't just let Jimmy Joe climb the fence to put up a banner).

I brought an item with me to the International Builders Show one year in Vegas. I carried it to the dock then a Union Worker had to transport it to our booth so we could take it out of the box and display it.

In the grand scheme of things they actually make things go smoother in these huge convention halls as they have multiple shifts and unload trucks 24/7 for load in and then do the same after the convention is over (they bring your crates to your booth, you load up the crates and then they get them to the semi's for shipment back (especially the really big booths that take multiple semi's to transport).

They were b!tching about the banners(union labor), and then I seen them using manlifts, etc. Letting someone who doesn't know OSHA guidelines, the ins and outs of the building, qualified to run the man lift, etc., would make it take longer, plus a much higher risk of injury. They don't need any hiccups, especially the first year. I mean how many of them with the show are trained on a man lift, have their PPE with them, and can hang them banners properly in an arena. This isn't putting some posts in the ground and throwing a banner up.

Yes, I'm in the operators Union, so yes, I know how to run a man lift, check it out, PPE etc. You can fuk up real quick on any equipment, especially man lifts. And before someone gets their panties all wadded up, I'm not saying you gotta be Union to run a man lift. I'm saying, whoever runs it, better be trained on that type of lift, and know how to properly hang banners in an arena.

I will say that I would imagine that the supervisor asked Kevin G. some questions and told him to make sure he and his staff were trained and to wear the proper PPE for when they were on the track prep equipment (the venue could get a fine for something as dumb as someone not wearing a seatbelt or a hardhat), but beyond that I can't see them being hard to deal with.

Personally, never had any issues at any of the trade shows I was ever at. Guys were always great to deal with and knew what their jobs were and allowed us to do what we wanted unless it was unsafe.
