To be clear non build the power or driveability of a BGR engine but that goes without saying
Andy Durham D3 Fords stand alone!

What some fail to realize about power is, how it gets to that big power is more important than how much HP there is. It's called usable HP. Also, each driver has a different feel for using that power, with out smoking the tires. Josh Richards seems to be more comfortable with the D3 than others. TMac, Birky and Pierce seem to be more comfortable with Pro Power. Some like Clements. What is right for one, may be bad for the next. Some drivers are so good, they adjust to anything.

Just remember that the well funded teams have more than one bullet in the trailer... I don't think you'll see a 900HP deal under the hood at an icy slick 1/3 mile... they have others on board for those tracks. And carburetors.... and a few even have lighter shoes.Member of the Luxemburg Speedway Hall of Fame

The D3 or SC1 is not only the most dependable and powerful piece out there its also the most driveable. The lack of cushion these days means the most peak power is certainly not the only factor. If they keep oil in Andy's D3s, they are the best piece in the history of the sport. The Rocket house car is truly a gift to the sport not something to be looked down upon. And the most expensive piece in history..attaining both an xr1 and a D3 puts you in the 1% of dlm racing so bragging on them doesnt do much for people cause getting them both are very unrealistic...and lets get a definition of driveability does the d3 have built in traction control? can the motor sense track conditions and take away and apply power when needed? Lol huck I didnt mean to include your quote my mistake...Originally posted by hucktyson View PostI'm pretty sure jimmy Owens won lucas titles with a d3 Cornett's before Andy Durham racing engines was a company. He didn't invent the d3 head and I doubt he ports raw castings with a wood chisel. I'm not disagreeing that clearly he builds great engines. The world 100 was stupid slick the last 2 years and cornett and pro power won them. Don O'Neil broke the track record and embarrassed everyone at Pittsburgh with a 10 degree cornett. All of the major builders have excellent pieces.Last edited by Illtsate32; 10-23-2017, 04:07 PM.

To put it simply they are very smooth. USAC dirt champ car drivers have told me the same thing. A new Lincoln MKZ makes 400 HP and so did a 390 Galaxie with three twos in 1961. Which one would you want to race someone down a back road with?Originally posted by Illtsate32 View PostAnd the most expensive piece in history..attaining both an xr1 and a D3 puts you in the 1% of dlm racing so bragging on them doesnt do much for people cause getting them both are very unrealistic...and lets get a definition of driveability does the d3 have built in traction control? can the motor sense track conditions and take away and apply power when needed? To be more technical, they have very broad even power curve at various RPMs. Eckert, Lanigan, Owens and Bloomer have won many titles with similar stuff mainly From Cornett but Andy has taken them to another level.

i still like my old c3 penske headed engine , and speaking of jimmy owens , he was wining races with c3 heads for a good while after the d3,s came out. Some still think the c3 , when prepared properly have a wider and smother torque curve than the d3,s or sc1,s........

Well put minthess thanks...and with the power band being different at different rpms I wonder if you would have an advantage on having more selection of what gear to run over others...Originally posted by minthess View PostTo put it simply they are very smooth. Absolutely. Good smooth torque means less gear needed in many cases.Originally posted by Illtsate32 View PostWell put minthess thanks...and with the power band being different at different rpms I wonder if you would have an advantage on having more selection of what gear to run over others...

With all the comments made about engines in this thread indicates people like to know what is under the hood. Too bad the powerplant type is not listed as well as the engine builder.

Anyone know why other builders beside Cornet and Hershey, don't push the old Ford stuff. Is Larry Wallace still building? Looks like a few big time guys need to swallow some pride and go with what winsOriginally posted by hucktyson View PostFor the record I do not have the 50k variety cornett. Racing is an extremely part time hobby for me and I refuse to spend that money on a motor that's only needed when the track is flooded
