Worked at Hap's Racing Engines in Ames, Ia in the late 80's (while in college), we had 'claimer' short blocks- one customer bought at least one a week as they were claimed (can't think who it was but I believe it was in an IMCA stock car not the modified). Agree on the Super Nat's, haven't been in a long time but will make the trip back up one day, great race but also a good time all around!

For one division it was one of my first World 100s. I think it was down to the one hundred and teens by then.

Overall most cars in the pit, no idea; I never was one to care about overall car count, really just lates, sprints and mods.

For the first big dirt race at Charlotte (won by SB) there were 190 late models and a ton of sprints. Humpy and Slack were the promoters and I think it paid $50K to win.

One of the first World 100's I went to, I remember being a kid and seeing like 236 late models there.

Back in the 90s. Claiming mod motors was the thing to do. In my area you get one of those nights where everybody rained out and all the hitters would flock to one track to get national/regional points. Guys like Murray, Saathoff, Larkins were running for national points and the track locals were ready to claim them when they popped in. Cash in hand. As kid it seemed like quite a big deal when those boys would line up on the front stretch and then a local would play the game as to which car they stop next to claim.

If you ever get a chance ask EPJ about them days. It was crazy in our area!

Even some local guys would get claimed 20+ times a year. $325.00, $25.00 to the wrecker. And the winners at Boone get promoter claimed, or crates torn down and swapped. Some of my favorite claimer motor sabotages never caught- Drill one of the motor mount bolts all the way thru to the outside of the bore, tap, install longer bolt to push on cyl wall, bore and hone as usual. At claim time motor mount gets removed, smokes like a chimney no compression in that cylinder. Most ran block mounted cam lobe driven fuel pump + alky. Use belt drive pump, but grind about 1/2 the fuel pump lobe down so the claimer can't get it to run past the corner, no fuel volume.

Usually if it goes awhile (3-4+ weeks) I've seen the promoter claim. They then auction it off. Half goes to the driver and the other half goes to the point fund. The bidding starts at the original claim price.

Loved those days. Murray ran my local track weekly. Most of the claims around here were guys buying motors for him.

OT a bit but Murray was a ball to watch when he ventured out more. In his own way always thought of him as the Bloomquist of the IMCA mod world, frequently had a little drama here and there. Forgot about the Boone Supernats, just about more racing in a week then you can stand.
