I somewhat agree, Moyer is definitely more my taste, but I understand why the so called drama exists with Bloomquist. Way, way back in the 80's in one of the very first interviews I ever read with Bloomquist he stressed the usefulness of the psych-out, psychological war fare. He said he purposely crafts his image in every way to appear intimidating. From the colors he chooses on his cars, to his hauler and his public demeanor. Over the years I've seen the usefulness of intimidation, not bullying, but providing and encouraging an air of superiority, which eliminates having to race a good portion of racers, they take themselves out mentally. In my early 30's I had the opportunity to work with Buck Simmons & Jack Pennington and they both at times used mental tactics to beat other drivers. Buck for example if we qualified badly or for whatever reason found ourselves deep in the field would deploy certain tactics that made passing guys much easier. On every start/restart he'd pull along side the next car in line, gun the engine a few times, but never look at them. Most of the time when they went back green that driver would try extra hard to keep Buck behind him and end up over driving and Buck would easily cruise by and onto the next victim. He had more tools like that in his drivers toolbox, but that always stood out to me how effective it was, again and again. The mental game, though denied by most victims, is very effective and crucial to success in motorsports and warfare. Shock & awe.

The USA Nationals were first run in the late 80s. I think you need to pick a race that is older.

There really only is one other race that would matter and that would be the Hillbilly. It’s the oldest race but I looked at the full feature results on DoD and the field isn’t as stout as the 5 I included. If you look at those 5 they’re all stacked with the best from all around the country. Just looking at the feature drivers and where they were all from, the Hillbilly looks to have been more of a regional event that got a lot of drivers from West Virginia or Southern PA in it’s early years. The winners purse was $25,000 for a long time then went to $40,000 then went back to $25,000 and now this year is the first year it was at $50,000.

Looking at the results of the Dream (1994, not in the 80s I guess but a huge race since 94 which is a long time ago), USA Nationals (1988), North/South (1983), World (1972) and DTWC (1982) you always have the best from all over the country every single year which then makes the win more meaningful because it was always against the best in the business and everyone brings their A-Game. I think if you can win those races you’re lit and if you can win them more than once you’re legit.

Show-Me (1993)
Topless 100 (1993)
Knoxville (2004)
Silver Dollar (2011)

I guess I could be forgetting another race. What other races still exist that started in the 80s or early 90s that is still around today and gets the best drivers year in and year out?

I think the Hillbilly is/was a big race. No way it was regional in the 80s. Jackson 100 was big back then.

I can remember when Bloomquist cherry-picked 1K and 2K to win races all over Eastern Kentucky instead of taking on the loaded STARS Series fields for bigger money three or four hours away. This was after he'd already won his first World 100. I know, because I attended many of those races. His groupies won't ever admit that though. But they want to attack a 60-year old legend with a long history of back trouble, for not travelling the country enough lol. These kinds of things are why everyone in the sport thinks 4m is a joke.
