The black gumbo out of the lower 1/3 of the Mississippi river has absolutely no sand in it and when watered right only gets tackier the more you race on it. It will pull your shoes after the features are over. The track will never take rubber and you can run a tire till it gets cut off because with no abrasion the tire never gets hot. Have run a full season and still had the titties on the tires on some good old McCreary gf-0 marsh mellows.

I would say it's clay with high levels of alkalinity that is stable in pH.

I would say that you’re not all that far off. With going on 35 years in the beverage industry in Az, I can tell you the water alkalinity in Phoenix is extremely high. I would say nothing compares to the clay at Knoxville, but the clay at Arizona Speedway wouldn’t be at the bottom of the lists if you compared it to all of the tracks that the Lucas Oil or WoO compete on a yearly basis. The guys doing the track prep for this years event has done a good job, as does Jonah who typically does the track prep during the race season.

Speaking of Jonah, prior to COVID, Jonah had also been leasing the track in Tucson where this event took place prior to Az Speedway.

As far as sand being in the clay, that could very well be possible if you figure this place was built in the middle of the desert. With the air being so dry and lack of rain, I am sure that sand below the clay draws the moisture from the bottom as well as the wear and tear from all of the racing.
